The surprises keep coming in the QAFLW

IN this week’s match of the round in the QAFLW, the University of Queensland finally got the monkey off the back, defeating Coorparoo for the first time in over five years.

The University of Queensland managed to break a 10 match losing streak against the Kings that stretched back to May 2017, winning by 11 points and taking top spot in the process.

Early on in their clash much of the action took place between the forward 50s, so scoring chances were few and far between.

There was an injury delay in the opening half of the first term with Charlotte Howard the victim of a painful tackle, but it took over 12 minutes for either side to put a major on the board. It was Coorparoo who did so via Amy Dwyer.

Steph O’Brien responded minutes later to put the Red Lionesses on the board, but then Chelsea Winn then responded about a minute later to restore Coorparoo’s lead back out to seven points.

The last few minutes of the term were played at a frenetic pace, but just in the shadows of quarter time Kaitlyn Day booted UQ’s second to bring things back down to one, which is where the margin sat at quarter time.

It did not even take a minute into the second quarter for UQ to take the lead after Kristen Tyquin soccered a major through off the ground.

Luka Yoshida-Martin kicked UQ’s second for the term and suddenly the Red Lionesses had a handy lead.

Coorparoo really struggled to get the ball into their forward 50 as the defensive pressure from the Red Lionesses really increased, but when they finally did Macie Brown converted for the Kings from a set shot to bring the margin back to a kick.

That is where the score sat at half time, so it really was all to play for in the second half with no clear answer as to who would emerge victorious.

UQ began the third term much like they ended the second, dominating possession and forward 50 time. The only problem for UQ this time was that they could not put the majors on the board.

UQ continued to struggle to put a major on the board, but they were also restricting the ability for Coorparoo to score, who could not even put a behind on the board.

Although the third quarter was ultimately goal free, it was certainly not entertainment free and as the teams turned for home, UQ had a nine point lead but things could really go either way in the last.

It took seven minutes, but it was Coorparoo who got the first goal of the final quarter on the board, and it came through Jo Miller who was the beneficiary of some incredible bounce. Miller’s goal brought the margin back to three points Coorparoo really were back in the game.

A brain fade from Louise Tyson denied Marnie McGorm a major to extend the UQ lead out to 10, but as the time ticked down, time was becoming more and more the Red Lionesses’ friend.

When Ashanti Jackson kicked her first, the margin was out to 11 points in UQ’s favour and ultimately the sealer as there was only a minute left in proceedings.

In other results:

  • Yeronga South Brisbane almost caused one of the upsets of the year, narrowly going down to Aspley.

The Hornets had a handy lead at the first change, but they did not score in the second half which saw the Devils get right back in the game but ultimately fall two points short.

Rachel Vetter booted two majors for the Hornets, while Courtney McDonnell booted two majors for the Devils.

  • While Yeronga South Brisbane may not have been able to cause an upset, Maroochydore certainly did as they defeated Southport by 16 points.

The Roos led by almost four goals at the main break and kept the Sharks to one goal in the first half, and things kept going up from there for the Roos.

Mikayla Martin kicked three of Maroochydore’s majors and Emma Day kicked two, while Hannah Davies was Southport’s sole goal kicker.

Bond University picked up another big win, this time the victim was Wilston Grange. The Gorillas kept the margin to only three goals at quarter time, but could not keep the margin that low after that as the Bull sharks ran away with the game.

Gabrielle Deller booted two majors for Bond while the Bull sharks had six other players all kick one.

Meanwhile for the Paige Schouw and Georgia Smith both kicked a single goal each.
