AFLW Season 7: Big Week For – Round 3
IN a new weekly piece throughout the AFL Women’s season, we name the players or teams who will be looking to have a big week in the upcoming round. From underperforming sides to players looking to step up or continue their form, Big Week For highlights those who could be ones to watch over the weekend.
This week’s edition features a few sides that have not been underperforming as such, but still face a huge week ahead in the context of their seasons.
Geelong
Geelong has notched two impressive wins so far this season, but who have they beaten? They scraped over the line against Richmond, and comfortably beat an understrength Fremantle side.
This week the Cats face a Collingwood side who, even without a selection of star players remains very strong and will be arguably the first major hurdle for Geelong to overcome. Now, we get to see where the Cats are really at as a potential team on the rise.
St Kilda
Much like Geelong, the Saints have had two impressive wins so far this season, but have not faced too much of a challenge yet, having taken on arguably the two weakest expansion sides in Hawthorn and Sydney.
This week is very different though. They face a Melbourne side who are one of the premiership contenders this season and have had two solid wins against top sides so far.
If the Saints can nab an unlikely win, it will prove their upward trajectory in the wins column should be far from shot-lived.
GWS
After looking promising against the Bulldogs but ultimately falling short of a win, the Giants could not continue that form against Brisbane last week, so find themselves at 0-2 heading into Round 3.
This week they face their crosstown rivals Sydney in the inaugural Sydney Derby, so this is the perfect opportunity for the Giants to make a statement and get on the board.
