Crows create statement with Round 2 win

THE Adelaide Crows have continued their strong start to Season 8 of the AFLW season, making it two from two, defeating Richmond by 29 points on Friday night at Ikon Park.

In wet, windy conditions, both sides were being challenged how they were going to use territory down the ground and use the space across all areas. Ebony Marinoff and Monique Conti provided a battle in the first quarter in the midfield, whilst Conti had plenty of touches. Caitlin Gould was instrumental in the first quarter up forward, but it was the Tigers with a five point lead at quarter time.

For the rest of the match, the Crows experience proved too much, keeping the Tigers scoreless. It also gave the Tigers’ defensive end plenty of challenges of stopping the Crows scoring run.

Crows defender Kiera Mueller played her role, keeping Richmond forwards Katie Brennan and Caitlin Greiser quiet, whilst Zoe Prowse stepped up in the backline.

Whilst Conti did what she could, being around every contest and getting hands on the footy in the middle, the Crows forced the midfield into plenty of mistakes and applied the pressure down the field.

When the Crows found their momentum in the second quarter, the likes of Danielle Ponter won plenty of opportunities, including a highlight goal from the centre circle. When the Crows needed a key presence and target, Ponter was the one who opened up the forward line.

Gould also stood up in the ruck, finishing the game with three goals. Gould provided a key up forward and has stepped up in the first two games.

The Crows will look to continue their undefeated start to season 8, facing Essendon at Wigan Oval, whilst the Tigers face the Giants in Round 3.
