In Case You Missed It: AFLW Round 8 2023

IT was an intriguing round of AFL Women’s action, with some potential season defining results across the weekend.

Hawthorn (4.6.30) lost to Richmond (6.5.41)

  • Richmond got back on the winners list and kept its finals hopes in tact with a win over the Hawks.
  • Hawthorn pushed the Tigers for much of the night but ultimately could not keep up as the Tigers kicked two crucial goals late.

Western Bulldogs (6.3.39) lost to Sydney (14.12.96)

  • Sydney recorded a huge win over the Western Bulldogs yesterday and did its finals chances a huge boost with a big win over the Bulldogs.
  • Sydney’s ball movement was particularly impressive, which allowed the Swans to find more space for themselves and really catch the Bulldogs on the hop.

Brisbane (5.12.42) defeated Adelaide (6.3.39)

  • Adelaide has suffered its first loss of the 2023 season, going down to Brisbane in an absolute nail biter.
  • It was an epic tussle all afternoon, but ultimately the Lions held on to the narrow win.

GWS (8.1.49) defeated Carlton (7.5.45)

  • In another tight tussle on Saturday afternoon, GWS held on for a confidence boosting win over Carlton.
  • It went down to the absolute wire, but the Giants held on for their second win of the season.

Yartapuulti (7.3.45) drew with Gold Coast (7.3.45)

  • Yartapuulti and Gold Coast continued the trend of close matches on Saturday afternoon with the first draw of the 2023 season.
  • In a seasawing affair the Power and Suns ultimately could not be split.

Narrm (5.7.37) defeated North Melbourne (2.2.14)

  • Naarm returned to the top of the table with an impressive win over the Kangaroos.
  • The Kangaroos held momentum and jumped to the lead early, but the Dees flicked the switch after quarter time and restricted the Kangaroos to only one behind for the remaining three quarters.

Collingwood (4.6.30) defeated Geelong (3.6.24)

  • Collingwood gave its finals chance a much needed boost yesterday with a win over Geelong.
  • In trying conditions at Victoria Park, the Magpies had to survive a late Geelong fightback to claim the win.

Walyalup (6.9.45) defeated St Kilda (3.3.21)

  • Walyalup kept its finals hopes alive for at least one more week with a huge win over St Kilda.
  • A four goal to one first quarter in favour of the Dockers really set up the win, and the Saints just could not keep up or overtake.

Essendon (2.7.19) lost West Coast (3.5.23)

  • West Coast caused perhaps the biggest upset of the round, defeating Essendon on the road to pick up its second win of 2023.
  • The Eagles caught the Bombers on the hop early, with the Bombers struggling to adapt to the very windy conditions a lot more than the Eagles.
