It’s the Final[s] Calculator | AFLW 2023

IT HAS reached the final fortnight of the AFL Women’s season once again, and the point in the season where the calculators really start to come out.

Season 8 may be the closest finish to an AFL Women’s home and away season the competition has ever seen, which leaves a lot still to be played out.

Let us crunch the numbers and see what may play out in the next fortnight, and what your favourite team needs to do in order to secure their spot in the finals.

Firstly, remarkably there are 13 clubs still in the running to play finals. Only Melbourne and Adelaide are safely locked into finals, which leaves 11 clubs – North Melbourne, Brisbane, Essendon, Collingwood, Gold Coast, Geelong, Carlton, Sydney, Richmond, St Kilda and Fremantle – battling it out for the remaining six spots.

However, realistically six of those clubs – Geelong, Carlton, Sydney, Richmond, St Kilda and Fremantle – are one loss away from their finals dreams ending, so they have to make sure everything goes right in the next two weeks. Geelong and Richmond also play each other this week, so that could ultimately be a mini-elimination final.

However, percentage may end up being Geelong’s friend. The Cat’s percentage is currently at 118.5 per cent, while everyone else currently on four wins has a percentage less than 100.

Also, 12 of the 13 teams still left in the running to play finals will be playing each other this week, so much of the top eight should become clearer at the end of this weekend.

If 13 teams still being in contention seems like a lot, there are also still six teams that can finish in the top four: Melbourne, Adelaide, North Melbourne, Brisbane, Essendon and Collingwood. Gold Coast can still technically make it, but they have to have a lot go in their favour to make it.
