SANFLW 24 to Watch in 2024: Laela Ebert
BACK for another year, Rookie Me Central’s 24 to Watch in 2024 returns and this time around, the focus is on underage players, being those who are yet to have an AFLW Draft chance. For the list of 2024, it will range between players who are predominantly 2006 (top-age) and 2007-born talents likely to take the SANFL Women’s by storm or set themselves up for the future.
The latest of the famous surname to grace Prospect Oval, top-ager Laela Ebert is the next player in our SANFL Women’s 24 to Watch in 2024 countdown. The 17-year-old had a breakout 2023 season after missing 2022 due to injury, playing 10 games for the Roosters at League level, then earning a spot in the state side playing all three matches for the undefeated Croweaters.

Position: Utility
Club: North Adelaide
SUMMARY
Ebert is the daughter for 100-game Rooster Daniel, and possesses outstanding skills by both hand and foot. After missing 2022 due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), Ebert bounced back to play 10 games in the red and white last season, averaging 10.9 disposals, 2.0 marks and 3.1 tackles.
Able to be deployed on multiple lines, Ebert filled in a number of positions for the Roosters, often winning the ball in the back half of the ground and looking to creatively turn defence into offence. For the Croweaters, she largely played in the back 50, locking down on an opponent and averaging 6.7 disposals and 3.0 tackles per game.
While her national championship numbers did not jump off the page, it was largely due to her defensive-minded role in a team that romped to victory in the carnival. She still showed her traits when given the chance, utilising skill and creativity from defence, and taking the game on when possible.
The fact Ebert is capable of playing forward – where she spent time for the Roosters – in defence, or even through the midfield, shows her versatility. She hopes to develop into more of a full-time midfielder in 2024 and begin to lift her production rates being around the ball, putting her smarts and skills to great use.
