WAFLW 24 to Watch in 2024: Dakota Sexton

BACK for another year, Rookie Me Central’s 24 to Watch in 2024 returns and this year, the focus is on underage players, being those who are yet to have an AFLW Draft chance. For the list of 2024, it will range between players who are predominantly 2006 (top-age) and 2007-born likely to take the WAFL Women’s by storm or set themselves up for the future.

The second Peel Thunder player to make our list of 24 players to watch in 2024, top-ager Dakota Sexton came on in leaps and bounds last season. She went from a sole WAFLW game in 2022, to playing all available games she could in a big season for the defender/midfielder.

Position: Defender/Midfielder

SUMMARY

Sexton only turned 17 in December so is a late year birth indicating additional room for improvement going forward. Starting as a medium defender, Sexton has earned midfield minutes over the past 12 months and now enters her top-age year well experienced to a season earlier.

After turning out for Peel Thunder’s League side just once in 2022, Sexton established herself in the Thunder’s WAFL Women’s side last season. She played 12 games and averaged 10.9 disposals, 1.4 marks and 4.3 tackles predominantly doing jobs in defence before getting more offensive roles up the field. Though not a massive accumulator, Sexton was ultra consistent, picking up 13 disposals in her last four games of the season.

Her form in the WAFL Women’s earned Sexton a spot in Western Australia’s Under 18s squad at the national championships, where she played a similar role, averaging 7.0 disposals, 1.0 marks, and 2.3 tackles from her three games.

Looking to Sexton’s game, it is easy to see why she has caught the eye of state selectors with her speed and strength combination. Her efficiency at times at can let her down, but her clean hands helps her win the ball quickly and play in multiple roles.

This season looms as a big one for Sexton who could well step up into a more full-time midfield role to use her speed and strength inside, but can also continue to work off a flank and turn defence into offence.
