SANFLW 24 to Watch in 2024: Grace Martin

BACK for another year, Rookie Me Central’s 24 to Watch in 2024 returns and this time around, the focus is on underage players, being those who are yet to have an AFLW Draft chance. For the list of 2024, it will range between players who are predominantly 2006 (top-age) and 2007-born talents likely to take the SANFL Women’s by storm or set themselves up for the future.

The second Eagle to land on this list, top-age forward-midfielder Grace Martin will enter her third SANFL Women’s season with plenty of confidence having tasted state level action with the Under 18s side last year.

GRACE MARTIN PROFILE

DOB: 01/09/2006
Height: 162cm
Position: Forward/Midfielder
Club: Woodville-West Torrens

SUMMARY

Martin is a small midfielder-forward who spent more time in the latter over the past couple of seasons, kicking five goals across 16 games at SANFLW level, but improved last year with four in eight. Though the Eagles have finished inside the bottom two, Martin has provided a spark at times and fitted in well amongst a young group at Woodville-West Torrens.

The top-ager is looking to improve on her speed in the 2024 season, with that being her main knock considering the other traits she has to offer. Able to apply pressure at ground level and is handy overhead, Martin has the smarts inside 50 that could translate to a more consistent midfield role in the future.

As a bottom-ager, Martin only played one Under 18s Championships match, recording 10 disposals, two marks, three tackles and two inside 50s in the Croweaters’ victory over Western Australia. Even when not winning the ball, Martin always brings the heat, even if just in pressure acts rather than rewarded tackles.

At SANFLW level, Martin averaged 8.8 disposals, 1.6 marks and 4.8 tackles through the 2023 season, with a couple of inside 50s and just over a clearance per game. In 2024, she has been earmarked for a possible on-ball role at state level, and it will be fascinating if she can further develop her craft in there to take an opportunity like that with both hands.
