AFLW Academy and All-Stars to clash again
AFTER producing a triple-digit win in game one, the AFL Women’s Academy will return to the field as a unit to take on a national All-Stars side on Sunday. The previous All-Stars team featured players from just Victoria, Northern Territory and Tasmania, but now includes players from across the nation including South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland.
The match on Sunday will take place from 11am AEST at RSEA Park, with all players on the All-Stars team aged 21 or under and is comprised of players who received nominations from all AFLW clubs. Bendigo Pioneers’ Jemmika Douglas, who played on the All-Stars team last time, will switch jumpers and represent the AFLW Academy due to several injuries reducing numbers on the side. Douglas is also a member of the 2024 Indigenous Academy.
The quartet of players missing from the match will be Elli Symonds and Poppy Scholz (who also missed the first match), Grace Baba and Tara Harrington. All four will still take part in the AFLW Academy camp at The Hangar on Friday morning, before a captain’s run at ETU Stadium on Saturday.
Among those players featuring in the AFLW Academy members are pick one contenders Ash Centra and Havana Harris, as well as top-end stars Zippy Fish, Molly O’Hehir, India Rasheed, Lucia Painter and Sara Howley.
The national All-Stars squad will see Fish’s East Fremantle teammates in Natasha Entwistle and Taya Chambers helping out in defence alongside Queensland’s Laura Roy. Fellow Sunshine State representatives Heidi Talbot and Zimra Hussain has also made the squad, while South Australian midfielders Violet Patterson – an eligible father-daughter election to Collingwood – and Grace Martin are others to keep an eye on.
From a mature-age perspective, Casey Demons ruck Lauren Jatczak and North Melbourne VFLW’s Nyakoat Dojiok are the two full-time VFLW players in the side. New South Wales also has a representative in talented Giants Academy utility Amelie Prosser-Shaw, while forward Ava Read hails from the Apple Isle.
