Banshees cast warning spell as Jaguares and Swans strike wins

THE 2024 Transatlantic Cup got underway overnight, with a mixed bag of results for the tournament heavyweights.

Banshees cast spell over USA

In the opening game of the day, Ireland sent a message to the rest of the competition, defeating the USA by four goals.

Despite some inaccuracy from the Irish, the Banshees put together a dominant first half, which really set up the win.

Shannon Stevenson, Anne-Marie Troy and Marie Keating each kicked two goals for the Banshees, while Shauna Kendrick slotted through a single goal.

Meanwhile for the Freedom there were no multiple goal kickers, with Catherine Hoha, Kaiya Sygulla, Liz Edd, Amanda Boe and Nicole Feery all kicking one goal each.

Swans upset Northern Lights

In what was the first upset of the day, Great Britain beaten Canada by the narrowest of margins to defeat the Northern Lights for the very first time.

Canada took the early lead before a big second quarter from the Swans really turned the tide in their favour, and despite Canada outscoring the Brits in the second half it was not enough as the Swans held on.

Eleasha Hyner kicked two goals in the win for Great Britain while Kate Franklin nabbed one goal. Meanwhile Nicole Robertson, Haley Jones and Amanda Irwin were the goal kickers for Canada.

Colombia causes upsets on debut

The final match of the day was between two countries playing their first 18 a side match at international level, and despite their lack of experience at international level Colombia caused a huge upset and beat France by 32 points.

The Jaguares kept the French goalless for the match as a big second quarter in particular helped them set up the win. Colombia’s goals came from Valentina Rodriguez, Andrea Murillo, Laura Diaz, Camilla Rubiano and Stefania Gualteros.
