Swans stay undefeated as Canada upset and USA win big

DAY two of the women’s competition at the 2024 AFL Transatlantic Cup continued to provide the surprises.

Swans stay undefeated

The Great Britain Swans have made it two wins from as many matches after defeating Colombia by 55 points in the opening game of yesterday’s action.

Colombia’s defence was particularly impressive, particularly restricting the Swans’ scoring early, but unfortunately for them so was the Swans’, so their forwards could not reward the defenders’ hard work.

Kate Franklin kicked two goals for the Brits, while Hannah Layton, Emma Baker, Cherry Halfyard, Lucy Newell and Elinor Geddes all kicked one each.

Canada bounce back with big upset

Canada bounced back from its day one heartbreaking loss in a big way, defeating tournament favourites Ireland by three points.

It was tight right through the match, but the Northern Lights managed to keep their noses in front all game to take the win.

Canada’s goal scorers were all individual goal kickers, with Jenn Minchin, Anna Brancati, Amanda Irwin, Nicole Robertson and Erin Loughnane all getting on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile Marie Keating and Anne-Marie Troy again kicked two goals each for Ireland, while Louise Scully kicked one.

Freedom bounce back with big win

After a day one loss, the USA bounced back with a vengeance, comfortably defeating France to the tune of 125 points.

The Freedom were already 10 goals ahead at half time and things just did not get better from there for the Gauloises, who were unable to put any score on the board.

Amanda Boe was the pick of the Freedom’s goal kickers with four goals to her name, while Connor Lewis kicked three and April Munn, Catherine Hoha, Kaiya Sygulla and Jess Blecher all kicked two goals each.
