Chuffed coach pleased with Lions turnaround

BRISBANE bounced back from a AFLW Round 1 loss in an impressive way, downing Melbourne by 18 points at Casey Fields yesterday.

Lions coach Craig Starcevich was pleased with how his team performed and continued the good run of form the side has had against the Dees at Casey Fields.

He said that the result was “really good” because of the recent success against the Dees, which he believed put the head-to-head record at Casey Fields in the visitor’s favour.

“After last week, after our third quarter last week, we’ve slowly started to turn things back a little bit to the way that we normally do things,” Starcevich said. “Still a bit clunky and a bit fumbly and a few things that we would like to do better and clean things up, but effort and sticking to what we spoke about pregame was excellent.”

Although the scoreboard pressure from the Lions was not consistent across the four quarters, consistency in other areas was, and Starcevich agreed that was important.

“Clearly today it was from going from start to finish,” he said. “We were probably even in the practice games. We’ve had a lull at some point in the game with a quarter or two.

“We haven’t been quite on and last week we really got torched for it, but today was good from start to finish, restricted the opposition and took our chances when we went forward.”

A massive part of Brisbane’s success yesterday was Ally Anderson, who broke the competition disposal record with a 43-disposal performance.

Starcevich described her performance as “phenomenal”.

“I think 22 contested, so quite a day,” he said. “Maybe double figure clearance too, I’m not sure. So just an incredible day from Ally. She’s getting good support around her, but she just year after year gets to work and she’s having days regularly now like she did today.”

When asked if Anderson has improved this year despite being such a good player for so long, Starcevich said “I keep seeing her physically improve”.

“Year-on-year where you think someone in their late twenties, early thirties shouldn’t be sort of gaining physically, she just keeps getting better. It’s a great lesson for everyone really that just because you’ve played eight or nine years that you haven’t reached your peak and you can always find some improvement.Ally just amazes us.”
