A RECORD-BREAKING agility test and a trio of sub-3.2-second 20m sprints highlighted some incredible results across the three AFLW State Draft Combines over the past week.
State Combines consist of players with fewer nominations than those at the National Draft Combine, but have still had significant AFLW club interest, with events held in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
The Victorian State Draft Combine – held on Sunday, October 6 immediately after the National Draft Combine – included players not only from Victoria, but NSW/ACT, Queensland and Tasmania. The South Australian State Draft Combine and West Australian State Draft Combine took place across both Saturday and Sunday just gone with representatives from the two respective states.
Without a doubt the most impressive performer across the two weekends was Bendigo Pioneers’ Lavinia Cox who broke the agility record at any previous Rookie Me-tested Combine with a score of 8.163 seconds, surpassing previous recordholder, Monique Conti. Cox also won the running vertical jump (70cm) and came second in the standing vertical jump (56cm), and recorded Top 10 finishes in the 20m sprint and 2km time trial.
Across the other side of the nation, East Perth’s Sabella Banks lit up the testing out west, winning both the sprint (3.159 seconds) and agility (8.212 seconds) to finish just shy of Oakleigh Chargers’ Charlotte Brewer in the former, and second only to Cox’s record-breaking effort, which also beat Conti’s 8.220-second performance.
There were plenty of familiar names in the top echelons of the sprint and agility tests, with Brewer clocking a 20m sprint time of 3.128 to be next best across all Draft Combines behind Tatyana Perry’s 3.125-second effort. Bond University’s Nyalli Milne was the pick of the northern states testing in Victoria, with Top 10 finishes in the four indoor tests.
Geelong Falcons’ Rebecca Clottey, Gippsland Power’s Lilly Leighton and Dandenong Stingrays’ Kayla Dalgleish were all frequent Top 10 finishes across the board, with Dalgleish backing up from when she scored the highest Player Performance Rating (PPR) in preseason testing.
Norwood’s Coby Morgan and South Adelaide’s Tiffany King – one of only two mature-age Draft Combine invitees – represented South Australia on the leaderboards, while Eastern Ranges duo Evie Parker and Molly Paterson impressed. Blitzing the 2km time trial, endurance runner Ellie Hall clocked a time of seven minutes and 14 seconds to finish a full 16 seconds clear of Victorian Abbey Vicino who still finished with an ultra-impressive seven minutes and 30 seconds.
