WALYALUP finished off its 2024 AFL Women’s season with a win, downing the Western Bulldogs in the final match of Week 10.
Speaking after the match had wrapped up, Dockers’ coach Lisa Webb agreed that getting the win was important to keep momentum heading into finals.
“They were impressive today. The Bulldogs, they’ve got a lot of great players and we knew they’d have that big fight in them as well, we just probably beat them with a few opportunities,” Webb said.
“But, I guess by some really strong performances by probably our mids in the end, the clearance work we just got on top and so we can take that into Essendon this week, which is exciting.”
The win ensured the Dockers will be hosting their first final next weekend, and Webb said she was “just delighted” to reward the fans who had been “incredible” all season.
“That’s really exciting for our group,” she said. “We haven’t been there for a few years and it’s a reward for effort for this group.”
Webb believed that her side’s work around the contest was really strong in the win.
“I thought Mim was superb” Webb said.
“Obviously Alice [Edmonds] is a brilliant ruck as well, but just her ability to continue to grind it out, I’ve had a chat with Mim previous. “She’s always looked up to Alice so she’s always determined to continue to build on her game and I guess that’s shown today as well.
“I think we need to continue to build that front half as well. We have lots of opportunities in the second and third which we just didn’t capitalise on.
“It’s obviously been an issue for us. We were a bit reactive at times especially early and I was really clear with the forwards that we needed to shift a few things and they did get to work, but obviously we’d rather not kick I think it was 10 behinds in the end.”
The question was raised about whether star defender Ash Brazill will be right for next week, and Webb said she is “really confident” Brazill will be ready to go.
“Obviously we’ve got to get through the next six days, but I’m confident,” she said. “I just tell her she has to put her feet up and not chase her kids around, which she does all the time. So that’s harder said than done but I’m confident she will, but we’ll see. Six days is still a long time in footy as we’ve started to figure out.”
