TALENTED athlete Macy Fair has done the hard yards to chase her AFL Women’s dream. Named as a train-on for the West Australian state squad last season, the top-ager is ready to make an impact since being included in the 2024-25 summer squad.
We spoke to the Subiaco AFLW Draft prospect – who is hoping to make her WAFL Women’s debut with the Lions this year – about her journey and goals for the future at the recent Preseason Testing event.
Q: Macy, tell us a bit about your football journey?
MF: “I started in community a few years ago now with Sterling. Played there whilst in school, then was lucky enough to get picked up by the development program and then was lucky enough to go to the Rogers Cup program a few years ago. I’ve just been working at that, worked at that for two years and then I got selected for the 16s team, got to play over east and then was lucky enough to do an 18s train-on last year and then come back for summer squad this year and hopefully playing League this year getting a debut in Round 1.”
Q: Getting that summer squad invite, what was that like for you?
MF: “Oh it was great. You have work really hard towards these things, and I worked really hard in the off-season so getting it was so exciting.”
Q: What do you see as some of the strengths in your game?
MF: “My agility and probably my vertical as well, just coming from the half-back.”
Q: What are you looking to improve on at the moment?
MF: “Definitely just my overall fitness and strength all around the ground and improving my craft.”
Q: What goals do you set yourself for this year?
MF: “The ultimate goal to get drafted would be amazing, but also getting selected for the winter squad and playing games for that, and having a good crack at League and having a really good season down at WAFL.”
Q: Who’s someone you look up to at the elite level?
MF: “Probably Charlie Thomas, she’s around at Subi as well. Coaching and helping out so having her as a rolemodel there, and then getting to watch her on the big stage and seeing how she plays is pretty inspiring.”
Q: Are you a West Coast fan?
MF: “Both Freo and West Coast.”
Q: It’s a National Draft now, have you given consideration to potentially moving interstate if that was to happen?
MF: “Yeah I’ve definitely thought about it. Getting onto any list would be a dream come true, so just going through the process and getting there would be cool.”
Q: Is there anyone at the top level you’ve aimed to model your game on?
MF: “I watch Mon Conti a lot. Not necessarily her position, just the way she plays the game and her craft. And obviously Charlie Thomas, and Sofia Hurley as well, a few of the bigger names.”
