South Australia confirms 2025 U16 Girls squad
SOUTH Australia’s Under-16 Girls squad for the 2025 AFL Women’s National Championships has been locked in, with the back-to-back titleholders searching for a three-peat at the April tournament. Coached by Bek McMahon for another season, the initial 49-player squad has been reduced back to 30 for the competition.
Norwood boasts the most players of any SANFL club with six, just ahead of Central District and North Adelaide who have five names each on the list. South Adelaide (four) is a clear fourth, while Glenelg and Sturt have three apiece. West Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens each have a couple of Under 16s prospects in the squad.
One of those Eagles is Maia Freemantle who was part of the championship-winning team last season as a bottom-ager and recently starred in the 2025 South Australian Preseason Testing. She along with North Adelaide’s Caitlin Hardin, Norwood’s Lillian Thomas and Sturt’s Charlotte Copson were the other players returning for the chance at a second straight title-run.
While the Under 16s squad is primarily focused on 2009-born players, the South Australian side boats eight 2010-born talents who will be eligible to play at the 2026 AFLW Under 16s National Championships as well.
South Australia will play one match on the road and one at home, with a clash against Western Australia at Revo Fitness Stadium in Claremont on April 6, before returning to Thomas Farms Oval on Tuesday, April 15 for a battle against the Brisbane Lions Academy.
