MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
FIRST QUARTER
Imogen Trengove started the match up forward, a role she would solidify throughout the contest. She took a little while to get involved, but got a touch up on the wing in the 10th minute which resulted in an Eagles goal down the track. A few minutes later, Trengove went up for a mark on the wing, was spoiled, but her second efforts at ground level allowed a handball away and yet again it lead to a team goal through Ruby Lynch.
Already Trengove had contributed to two goals with her quick hands on the wing, and she would win a couple more touches in the forward half of the ground under pressure to finish what had been a fairly productive opening term.
SECOND QUARTER
With the wind firmly heading Central District’s end, the second term was a quieter one on the Eagles’ scoring front, with no goals kicked into the breeze. Trengove did win a few touches however, with the first couple being quick handballs under pressure yet effective, before getting involved in transition midway through the term to kick inside 50 to the hotspot.
In the last few minutes of the term, Trengove had her first shot on goal which saw her gather cleanly, turn and snap but unfortunately went to the near side. A mix up between Trengove and Marlie Fiegert as the siren sounded – where Fiegert had marked inside 50 and Trengove made a short lead to be closer to goal as it blared – saw Fiegert have a brief brain fade in kicking to her teammate after the siren had blown. Given the Eagles were still in control it was not the end of the world, but showed how keen the players were to get it in Trengove’s hands.
THIRD QUARTER
Trengove’s third quarter was as good as any player’s individual quarter this season. From start to finish she was everywhere and would finish with an incredible three goals. Still working up to the wing early, the Eagles top-ager won a few disposals in the opening few minutes often after marking contests gathering at ground level. Even when she slips in the marking contest, Trengove recovers well and puts it to a teammate’s advantage.
In the 14th minute, Trengove was able to hit the scoreboard for the first time, receiving it from Maia Freemantle inside 50, bursting away to within range and slotting it perfectly on the run. Just a minute later, it was Trengove providing a goal assist to Fiegert with a lovely long inside 50 after winning it on the wing and again bursting away.
When Trengove had it near the boundary at the 18-minute mark, then gathered, stepped inside an opponent by selling candy and slotted the goal from a tight angle, the incredibly gifted top-ager looked unstoppable. Despite that, her best was still yet to come.
When the time ticked into the 20th minute, Trengove won the ball under pressure 40m from goal, sold candy again to her opponent, stepped to get onto the right and slotted a wonderful goal on the run. It was hard to put into words what she had achieved in the quarter, having kicked three goals, all of which had some degree of difficulty due to the opposition defence, angle required or both.
Trengove’s final touch in the extended quarter due to the eight goals, was a handball at half-back after she took it cleanly, spun and around and dished it off well. It ended what had been a remarkable last 15 minutes for the youngster.
FOURTH QUARTER
Back against the breeze again, it was not as easy for the forward, with only a few touches to end the game. She took her first mark in the middle of the ground and no one opted to be on the mark so she played on to kick inside 50 precisely, then darted to the goalsquare as an option.
Midway through the quarter, Trengove pounced on a loose ball in the middle and burst away to break a tackle, was confronted by Georgia Madigan and brought down, but still got the handball away at least. Her last touch in the final few minutes was a handball at half-back having worked up the ground yet again.
FINAL THOUGHTS…
Imogen Trengove is a naturally gifted player who can play across all three lines. In Round 3 she went to half-forward and was dominant through an outstanding purple patch in the third quarter. Though that was where she kicked three goals, her impact throughout the match was great, setting up no less than three other goals.
While her marking and strength in contested situations are areas she can work on, Trengove is clean and has the explosive athletic traits to get away from would-be tacklers. It enables her to win the ball and take off, which in turn makes it tricky for opponents to tackle her, and she has the ability to get her hands free to dispose of the pill.
Going forward, Trengove will likely spend time both off half-back and through the middle, and has the potential to be similar to former Eagle Grace Martin in her top-age year, where her footballing smarts enable her to play any role. However with her remarkable speed-endurance mix, she has the potential to pose lots of problems for opponents, and her finishing is also fantastic as shown in the Round 3 win.
