2025 AFLW Under 16s Championships preview

A FIRST look at the 2027 and 2028 AFLW Draft crops begins at a national level on Sunday, with the first of 10 matches across the next 12 days. In an expedited schedule, the National Under 16s Development Championships sees 10 teams – including the four Northern Academies – play two matches across the next fortnight.
NEED TO KNOW
It all kicks off on Sunday in the West when reigning two-time champions South Australia travel to Revo Fitness Stadium to take on the Sandgropers. Action heads north on Wednesday when the two Victorian sides travel to the Sunshine State to face the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns Academy in Aspley, before the Suns host Western Australia at People First Stadium on Sunday week.
The Sydney Swans and GWS Giants Academies join proceedings on Monday, April 14 when a double-header at Blacktown International Sportspark sees the Northern Academies face Tasmania and Northern Territory respectively. A standalone match at Unley finishes off South Australia’s carnival against the Brisbane Lions, before an all-Victorian clash on Wednesday, April 16 at Shepley Oval.
The final day of the National Development Championships takes place in Blacktown, as the Swans and Giants remain at home for the duration of the tournament, tackling the opposite states from three days earlier.
South Australia will look to defend its Pool A title with the Queensland Academies, Victorian sides and Western Australia all eligible for that trophy, while the NSW/ACT Academies, Tasmania and Northern Territory chase the Pool B title. GWS Giants are the reigning champions.
