EAST Fremantle has soared into pole position on the WAFL Colts ladder after beating third-placed West Perth by 43 points in Joondalup on Saturday night. The Sharks led at every break but kicked away with four goals to one in the third quarter, going on to salute 13.7 (85) to 6.6 (42) on the road.

Benjamin Woods took his goal tally to 12 in the last three weeks with a season-high haul of four, while Tom Grylls led all comers with 31 disposals, nine marks and a goal to be best afield. Josh Nomlatyu (22 disposals, 18 hitouts) also had a hard battle with Falcons ruck Sebastian Hewitt (14 and 34).

West Perth went in without three state Under 18 representatives, but fielded bottom-age squad members Harvey Spawton-Guy (17 disposals, five marks) and Koby LeCras. Judd Marcello (25 disposals, eight tackles, two goals) starred in the defeat, while Peter Young clunked 13 marks.

The Sharks are now a game clear in top spot, leading South Fremantle and West Perth in equal-second. The Bulldogs were one of five sides with the bye in Round 9 but will have their right of reply against East Perth next week. Their superior percentage will hold them in good stead to climb back atop the tree.

In the weekend’s other fixture, Subiaco made it two wins on the trot after taking down reigning premier Claremont by eight points on Friday night. The Lions had their three-goal buffer pegged back to four points at three-quarter time, but held firm to run out 8.4 (52) to 6.8 (44) victors at Leederville Oval.

Minus its two state representatives, Subiaco was spearheaded by the efforts of Toby Jones (26 disposals, 10 tackles). Lucas Santich (20 disposals, five marks, five inside 50s) and Corbin Boylson (17 disposals, six marks, six inside 50s) were also impactful in the win.

For Claremont, Max Hansen-Knarhoi could not have done much more than his 23 disposals, six marks, and four goals – the Tigers only kicked six overall. Joshua Grahame joined him in racking up a team-high 23 touches, while Kaleb Germain got his hands dirty with 10 tackles.

Subiaco now moves up into fifth spot, level on four wins with Claremont. Both sides will put their feet up for a bye next week before returning to action in Round 11 on Saturday June 21. The Lions take on East Perth at Leederville Oval, while the Tigers host West Perth at Claremont Oval.
