Scouting Notes | 2025 WAFLW State Academy: Round 10

THOUGH the WAFL Women’s clubs were missing a number of key players across the board, there were still plenty of impressive individual performances from State Academy members. We took note on how each of them performed across Round 10.

All notes are the opinion of the individual author.

  • Swan Districts

Subiaco:

#24 Sunni-Quay Peters (Defender)
Stats: 11 disposals, 3 marks, 11 tackles

Played a more proactive role this week compared to Round 10 and often had to nullify Gerardi. While her opponent is one of the most explosive players, Peters is no slouch and competed hard with some fierce tackling. She won the battle when opposed to her and her positioning across the ground was really important. In the opening minute of the fourth term, Peters had a smart sidestep in the back 50 to kick cleanly to half-back. A consistent four-quarter effort.

#27 Layla Quinn-Schofield (Forward/Midfielder)
Stats: 18 disposals, 2 marks, 10 tackles, 4 inside 50s

One of the most potent Lions on teh day, Schofield’s left boot certainly did some damage to the Swans, finding targets inside 50. She spent time around the ball as well and found her fair share of it, able to use her strong frame and smarts to get involved at the coalface. She laid double-digit tackles and one of those was a holding the ball free on Emily McGuire where from the forward side of the wing she hit up Hayley Corlett for a goal assist. Really stood up with the pressure on.

Swan Districts:

#14 Ava Stewart (Defender)
Stats: 4 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles

Spent the day down back and though not on Olivia Wolmarans, did have to take a pretty impressive Chloe Shearing. At times Stewart lost her in traffic which posed a problem, but she did her best one-on-one and competed in the air and at ground level.

#18 Sienna Gerardi (Forward)
Stats: 12 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50

Had to work hard with Peters tracking her every move for the most part, and she pushed up the ground to get involved right through the middle then double back towards goal. She was clean and able to shrug the odd tackle, and though under pressure she did turn the ball over, provided dash once she saw any type of openings to tuck the ball under the arm and burst away.

  • Team
  • South Fremantle
  • West Perth

South Fremantle:

#25 Eva Flynn (Forward)
Stats: 9 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 1 behind

Though not having a lot of chances, Flynn looked mighty dangerous inside 50 with her ability to win the ball and sidestep a defender or find space where few others could. She had one shot on goal that registered a behind and a couple more that went deep into dangerous spots. Once the ball hit the ground, the top-age prospect came to live and though not able to pinpoint passes, still created a few headaches with her athleticism.

#31 Marie Polimeno (Defender)
Stats: 7 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle

Played her role without having a huge influence, though did take a crucial intercept mark late in the game. She stood tall when she needed to and while largely playing deeper, got released a tad in the last quarter. Often found herself under pressure and had to rush, but as a whole competed well in the air and at the ground level.

West Perth:

#25 Lexi Strachan (Midfielder)
Stats: 14 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 goal

After a massive game the week before, Strachan looked threatening early with a massive goal off a step or two from long-range sailing home to get her team up and about. That ended up being the only major for the Falcons, and though Strachan did have some nice moments, was not able to get as much freedom as past weeks. The bottom-ager was still strong defensively.

#31 Cara Dziegielewski (Ruck/Forward)
Stats: 6 disposals, 6 tackles, 17 hitouts, 1 inside 50

Used her height well around the ground at the ruck stoppages and really applied great defensive pressure once the ball hit the deck. Not necessarily a great day for talls given the wet conditions underfoot even with the perfect weather, Dziegielewski covered the ground well and showed off her athleticism.

  • Team
  • Claremont
  • Peel Thunder

Claremont:

#11 Ella Gilbey (Forward)
Stats: 13 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 1 inside 50, 2 goals, 1 behind

Again caused a number of headaches for the opposition with her speed off the mark and ability to double-back. She positioned herself well in dangerous spots and tended to peel back from stoppages in the front half to get into space out the back. Her work rate up the ground was very good, even getting to half-back at some stages, and while at times she took a little while to gather, finished with an influential game, converting two goals and hitting the post with another chance.

#15 Hannah Seaborn (Defender)
Stats: 9 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle

After four goals on debut and two more League games before dropping back to Rogers Cup, Seaborn was recalled not to play the Wolmarans role, but instead the Olivia Crane role in defence. She did not have a stack to do at times, but played aggressive and proactive football, that included a fantastic floating intercept mark in front of a back in defence. She can weight her kicks and possesses brilliant athleticism for a tall.

#33 Juliet Kelly (Midfielder)
Stats: 20 disposals, 1 mark, 5 tackles, 2 inside 50s

It was another typical Kelly performance from the hard-running midfielder who was strong and clean on the inside. She played her role within the team, standing up when required with her handball release when tackled so impressive. She always applies fantastic defensive pressure and is just solid across the board.

Peel Thunder:

#8 Tiama Collard (Forward)
Stats: 9 disposals, 1 mark, 4 tackles, 2 inside 50s

Was limited for opportunities throughout the match but still had some brilliant highlights including a blistering run-down tackle on the wing midway through the third term. She hit a pinpoint pass in the opening term inside 50 and was clean by hand to Chloe Wrigley for a shot in the final term, to do what she could from minimal chances on goal.

#26 Charlie Fletcher (Wing)
Stats: 21 disposals, 4 marks, 8 tackles, 5 inside 50s

Such a special talent and one for Peel Thunder to build around the next couple of years. The hard-running wing has enormous X-factor, great defensive pressure and is clean by hand. She has taken no time at all to get adapted to League level and her ability to sidestep opponents and explode away catch the eye, though her natural intent to hunt the ball carrier as well as the ball is a terrific quality to have as well.

  • Team
  • East Fremantle
  • Perth

East Fremantle:

#13 Maya Louvel-Finn (Defender)
Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 1 inside 50

Has not played a bad game all year and that continued again on the weekend, playing a key role in defence. She spreads well when her side has the ball to be a switch option or someone to drive it down the field, then doubles back to be accountable on an opponent too. Louvel-Finn does all the team things and mopped up in the back 50, being clean with ball in hand and just harassing the opposition forcing mistakes or second guessing.

Perth:

#34 Addison Opalinski (Defender)
Stats: 15 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 2 inside 50s

Held a strong position across half-back and did plenty of team things throughout the match. Though her disposal was rushed at times and resulted in turnovers, she was often under a fair amount of heat. She laid a couple of strong tackles and applied pressure herself even when not rewarded with an official tackle.

#37 Mia Carlshausen (Defender/Midfielder)
Stats: 18 disposals, 1 mark, 1 tackle

The rebounding defender was among the best Demons once again and looked to create something from the back half. Her knack of using her low centre of gravity to spin and shrug would be tacklers, before being quick to get ball to boot is impressive. She intercepts and though did drop a couple of potential marks, was clean once the ball hit the deck and provided important run out of defence. Went into the midfield later in the game, and while still having aspects to build up such as her strength, Carlshausen has some nice footballing traits.
