SPEEDY wing-turned-forward Zoe Vozzo has produced plenty of highlights this season, not only stepping up in her top-age season for Eastern Ranges, but also Vic Metro. Her impressive over the head goal when facing away from the big sticks against the Allies caught the eye, while she also booted three majors in the win over South Australia.
We spoke to Vozzo ahead of the year at the Coates Talent League Girls Preseason Testing event about her footballing memories, game and goals for the year ahead.
Q: Zoe, tell us about your earliest football memories and how you got to where you are now?
ZV: “I started playing in 2018, but I used to go for a kick. with my brother. I started playing at Wantirna South Junior Football Club. I guess it kind of went from there in 2018 Under 12s.”
Q: What are some of your strengths?
ZV: “I’d say my kicking and my run and carry, and I feel like my tackling’s improved a lot so I feel like they’re my three biggest strengths.
Q: What are you still working on?
ZV: “Ground balls in general and aerial.”
Q: What kind of role do you think you’ll play this year?
ZV: “Wing and maybe forward.”
Q: Some really great players last year gone on to get drafted, what was that experience like?
ZV: “It was really cool. Just playing with them, they’re such good role models and having such good girls to play with, and when they got drafted it was just surreal. Having friends get drafted, it was just really cool. They were a bunch of great girls.”
Q: Do you watch a lot of AFL or AFLW and who do you support?
ZV: “Yeah I do, and Essendon.”
Q: Are there any players you look up to that you mould your own game on?
ZV: “Sam Durham in AFL, and I feel like in AFLW, Georgia Nanscawen, she also plays for Essendon. She’s very quick and wins a lot of hard balls.”
Q: Finally, what do you see as some of the strengths in your game?
ZV: “Obviously my main one is to get drafted but also just to play consistent footy, good footy and for my weaknesses to become my strengths. Just improving every day and leaving no regrets behind.”
