Scouting Notes: Chargers overcome inaccuracy to raid Rebel territory

OAKLEIGH Chargers have notched up their fourth win of the season after defeating the GWV Rebels by 18 points in their Round 10 clash at Mars Stadium. The visitors posted a whopping 30 scoring shots but managed just one more goal than their game opponents, who were again led valiantly by star midfielder Ethan Drever. We took note of the top prospects and performers from either side.

GWV REBELS:

#4 Ethan Drever
Midfielder | 188cm | 10/07/2008

Stats: 29 disposals, 6 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 goal

Drever was typically ferocious at the contest, winning the majority of his possessions in hard-fought scraps at stoppage. He demonstrated repeated tackle efforts on the few occasions he was beaten to the ball.  In one of his best moments, the rugged midfielder goaled from just inside 50 on the move with an opponent in pursuit. This kid doesn’t play bad games.

#11 Leo Ellerton
Forward/Defender | 182cm | 08/08/2008

Stats: 26 disposals, 7 marks, 7 tackles, 2 goals

It was a strong all-round performance from Ellerton. The versatile Rebel kicked the first goal of the game off from a textbook front and centre crumb. He was able to sneak up on opponents and bring them down in tackles on multiple occasions. Ellerton was good on the outskirts of stoppages and was able to get from contest to contest with speed. He went to half-back late in the game and was clinical.

#14 Archie Elliott
Forward | 182cm | 10/03/2008

Stats: 11 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles, 4 goals

The lively small forward continues to present excellently inside 50 for teammates up the field and can be found almost always in front of his direct opponent. He was as dangerous at ground level as he was on the lead and, most importantly, he succeeded in front of goal on a day when many struggled.

#23 Jackson O’Brien
Ruck | 205cm | 05/06/2008

Stats: 15 disposals, 6 marks, 32 hitouts

It was an utterly dominant performance in the ruck from O’Brien. The young tall won hitouts by a fair margin and was able to supply his mids with first possession routinely. O’Brien was also the more physical ruck and could grab the ball out of stoppages with ease. He was useful around the ground as well and took some handy grabs throughout.

OAKLEIGH CHARGERS:

#1 Boyden George
Forward | 180cm | 22/09/2008

Stats: 15 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 goals

Playing predominantly as a forward, George showed off his blue-collar grit. He often acquired possession with players hanging off him, including his second goal in the third term when the game was heating up. George was persistent inside 50, offering support in the air and on the ground, and he was one of the few who kicked straight in front of goal.

#9 Harper McCullough
Midfielder | 176cm | 29/05/2009

Stats: 29 disposals, 6 tackles, 8 clearances, 7 inside 50s

It’s hard to believe McCullough is still 16. He has some of the cleanest hands in the competition and seemingly never fumbles. He is always alert to where the nearest teammate is and is merciless to opponents in possession of the ball. It was nice to see him show off some dash in the second quarter as he sped away from a would-be tackler.

#16 Sam Papas
Defender | 173cm | 21/03/2008

Stats: 24 disposals, 8 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Papas did a bit of everything on the day. His role was mainly to distribute out of defensive 50, but on occasion, he showed off some overlap running and facilitation up the field. The small defender was often hard to catch, he released the ball in the blink of an eye and swept up loose ball across half back.

#27 Antonio Giampa
Midfielder | 183cm | 20/03/2008

Stats: 28 disposals, 9 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 goal

The energetic on-baller deserves a lot of credit for his work rate. He was one of his side’s leading ball winners but was also a constant contributor without the ball. Giampa applied timely smothers and tackled viciously. Late in the third term, he bravely ran back with the flight of the ball and crashed into a player coming the other way, but resiliently bounced back up shortly after. Giampa also spent moments forward and was hard to beat on the lead.
