BACKGROUND

A top-ager in the 2026 Talent League Girls competition, Tayla Olivieri is a natural ball-winning midfielder who has firmly established herself as one of the Western Jets’ most important players. Coming off a breakout 2025 season where she claimed the club’s Best and Fairest award in her bottom-age year, Olivieri has continued to build her draft profile. Known for her tenacity, burst speed from stoppages, and elite defensive pressure, the Vic Metro representative is a player who thrives in the contest but also has the footy IQ to drift forward and hit the scoreboard.
Having grown up watching her father coach her brothers, Olivieri’s football journey started slightly later than some, only taking up the sport at Under 14s level. However, she has quickly made up for lost time. Donning the long sleeves against the Rebels, Olivieri’s Round 10 performance was a testament to her two-way running and ability to consistently find the football when her team needed it most.
PLAYER FOCUS
Stats vs. GWV Rebels, Round 10: 25 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 6 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50.
QUARTER ONE
Starting on-ball in the long sleeves as a loose midfielder, Olivieri set the tone early. While she was pushed over the ball when initially going to get it, she quickly recovered at the secondary ball-up, winning a handball away well to a teammate to clear the congestion.
Her spatial awareness was evident as she gathered off an intercept kick inside 50, holding her line outside the forward arc and working into space to try and run and carry. Olivieri covered the ground exceptionally well, even late in the term. She gathered in the middle, executed an effective kick across the wing, and immediately followed up to win another handball while being tackled. She capped off the quarter by flicking out a handball in defence in the dying seconds.
QUARTER TWO
Remaining on-ball as the loose midfielder, Olivieri’s offensive transition running was a highlight. When a teammate won the clearance, she streamed forward to provide an option. She showcased her vision by delivering a quick handball to a teammate running past on the wing, and shortly after, held a great line at centre half-forward to take an intercept mark at the top of 50, hitting up a teammate on a 45-degree angle inside 50.
Her standout moment of the term came at the eight-minute mark with a lovely centre clearance. Olivieri produced a clean pickup, executed a sharp sidestep, and drove the ball inside 50. When the ball was rebounded, she followed up on the defensive side of the wing, kicking away and then winning a second kick from the ensuing contest. While her kicks to space weren’t always pinpoint, her sheer volume of clearances and ability to keep driving the ball forward under pressure was crucial.
QUARTER THREE
Matching up against Ivy Roberts at the start of the second half, Olivieri continued to accumulate. She got to the right spots, and even when a ball spilled through her hands, her second effort was elite – following up to win it and kick clear to space. She then pushed out to the wing to win the ball again, delivering it to a one-on-one at half-forward.
Her clean hands were a feature, picking the ball up smoothly off the deck on the defensive side of the wing and again in the middle of the ground midway through the term. Her work rate remained high, constantly running hard in the overlap even when she wasn’t the one receiving the ball. At the 16-minute mark, she burst out of defence, took a couple of bounces, and although she was almost run down, managed to kick further afield. She did have one blemish when she tried to break a tackle in defence and was pinged holding the ball by Roberts, but she quickly made amends by gathering in defence, fending off an opponent, and getting a handball away.
QUARTER FOUR
Starting on-ball against Macy Irvin, Olivieri went in hard at the opening centre bounce. She won a free kick for being held on the wing against Milly Shortal and executed an effective short pass inboard. While she had a slight hiccup getting her hands free in a tackle at a centre ball-up only to cough it up to an opponent bursting past, her response was immediate.
She gathered on the wing, burst inside 50, delivered an effective kick, and held her line at the top of the arc. Her quick hands were on full display with a lovely flick handball in the centre to a running teammate. Fittingly, she put the icing on the cake at the 19-minute mark, setting up a crucial goal with a brilliant handball out of a stoppage to Adelina Demitrovski to help seal the victory.
SUMMARY
Tayla Olivieri is a natural ball-winner who combines inside grit with outside burst. Her 25-disposal, six-clearance performance against the Rebels highlighted her ability to consistently drive the ball forward and link up with teammates. While she is still refining her composure and kicking efficiency when bursting out of stoppages, her clean hands, sidestep, and relentless follow-up work make her a constant threat.
The top-age midfielder covers the ground exceptionally well and has the defensive pressure to match her offensive output. As she continues to iron out her final execution, Olivieri is putting together a very strong draft profile and remains a key player to watch for the remainder of the 2026 season.
