SANDRINGHAM Dragons picked up an impressive 33-point win over Geelong Falcons at Trevor Barker Oval, kicking the first eight goals of the game before the Falcons finished strongly with the last three majors. Though finals are out of reach for the metropolitan side the Dragons were able to impress in the penultimate round of the season to win, 8.6 (54) to 3.3 (21).

We took note of some of the players who caught the eye from the game.

#2 Grace McIntyre

Stats: 17 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 1 clearance, 4 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s

McIntyre has gained great versatility throughout the season, remaining in a rotational wing role, while spending time both forward and back. Her role on the weekend included more of the latter, and while at times she did not have a lot to do, still dashed up the field and provided that balance of offensive and defensive traits. Finds space and her aerial prowess is delightful, taking some big grabs including a couple of crucial ones. Her efficiency by foot is still a work in progress, but her metres gained and ability to create run and carry stood out.

#5 Grace Perrett

An industrious performance from the big-bodied Perrett who impacted most from a defensive standpoint. She laid double-digit tackles, but was not just a pure defensive player, able to push forward and hit the scoreboard during the third term with a clever goal off the outside of the boot. Had some other chances forward of centre – including a set shot that drifted to the right and another that just fell short – but continually presented and was busy throughout the four quarters.

#11 Georgia Berryman

Stats: 19 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 8 inside 50s, 1 behind

A prototype modern-day wing with great size and athleticism enabling her to be a real threat between the arcs. Given the one-sided nature of the game, Berryman was highly attacking and able to drive the ball inside 50 consistently. Competitive in the air, she usually looked to keep the ball moving quickly, and while her kicking can sharpen up, her team-high 10 handball receives showed a mix of hard running and support from her teammates to get the ball in her hands.

#16 Charlotte Embelton

Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 2 hitouts, 2 goals, 1 behind

Playin forward, the sister of recent Hawthorn AFLW addition Annabelle was busy throughout the contest. She kicked the two goals – one in the opening minute of the second term after a strong mark and another waltzing in for the easiest of goals six minutes into the fourth quarter – while also having a few gettable chances. Embelton passed off to hand Molly Allan a goal, while also applying enough defensive pressure at ground level to worry opposition defenders. One of a number of promising bottom-age stars.

#19 Chloe Moffat

Highly rated internally, Moffat is building a nice profile coming off half-back, and like Berryman, stands at 177cm. She can play on talls and smalls, but her positioning – often against Vic Country representative Claudia Collins – was really eye-catching. Her disposal by hand or foot was effective and she broke down the game with her combination of interception and transition. A name to remember for 2027.

#28 Claudia Kogler

Stats: 26 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 3 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Speaking of 2027 prospects, Kogler gave a glimpse into the Dragons’ midfield next season if she and the absent Maya Duane can combine, with a best-on performance for her side. She is strong at ground level, competitive around the contest, and she can provide a target inside 50 when resting forward. Possesses a nice attacking game, while her clearance ability and stoppage craft stands out. Boasting a nice turn of speed and ability to get out of trouble, Kogler looms as a serious player.

#29 Isla Tucker

Stats: 17 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 8 clearances, 4 inside 50s

A really neat prospect with a lot of nice traits, Tucker just does about everything right. While speede is the main knock, her disposal by foot is usually delightful and she would be one of the first players you want the ball in the hands of going forward. Her transition from bottom-aged defender to midfielder this year has been a positive one, and she was able to have a high impact-per-possession in the penultimate round. Tucker ran at 82.3 per cent disposal efficiency despite the bulk of her disposals (11) being contested.

#51 Sophie Storey

Stats: 13 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 hitout, 1 inside 50, 1 goal, 1 behind

A tall marking target who competes in the air forward of centre, Storey has a nice pair of hands, and as she builds into her frame, will become a real problem for opposition defenders. She covers the ground effectively, can be that high half-forward or roll deeper, and as she showed on the weekend, is capable of hitting the scoreboard. She did so when marking the goalsquare and slamming home a major late in the third term. She loves to run – and got pinged for running too far – and moves the ball quickly in transition.

#5 Ava Bilyk

Stats: 31 disposals, 2 marks, 12 tackles, 9 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 10 rebound 50s, 1 behind

There’s not much else left to say about Bilyk with the Vic Country MVP just bringing her own ball for fun. The Dragons were very wary of her ability to impact and she just shrugged it off to put in a best on ground performance in a losing side. Boasting video game numbers and picking up close to football’s equivalent of a quadruple-double – with 31 disposals, 12 tackles, 10 rebound 50s and nine clearances – she stuffed the stats sheet and kept pressing for her team. An incredible two-way player who only managed the one behind – a checkside snap from the boundary that just missed – she always looked like the difference maker.

#17 Greea McKeegan

Starting off a wing each quarter and rotating forward, McKeegan is a threat any time she can win the ball and open up to kick long downfield. One of those players who can penetrate defensive zones if given the chance, she can make mistakes by foot, but when able to compose herself can nail some terrific passes. Only got the one behind in the game – a long-range attempt that looked on target before drifting, McKeegan has a great athletic profile to compliment her footballing smarts.

#19 Jemma Andrews

Stats: 20 disposals, 1 mark, 6 tackles, 2 hitouts, 3 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

A strong inside ball-winner who has been tested as a key position player too, Andrews uses her frame to provide plenty of defensive pressure at ground level. One who can thump the ball a long way, she is also effective in the air, and while only taking the one mark, held her line to get involved between the arcs. A prospect who will benefit from another preseason and round out her game next season in her top-age year.

#27 Claudia Collins

Stats: 14 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Exciting but with limited chances, the talented left-footer continually presented as a target inside 50 and working up the ground as well. She competes in the air, boasts clean hands and is quick to get ball to boot, with any time or space proving a problem for the opposition. Still building her overall consistency within games, Collins has some great traits to look out for in the future.

#29 Meyah Fursland

The ever-reliable Fursland was one of the last defenders in the Falcons’ backline, often under siege from the amount of repeat entries for the Dragons. She applies pressure at ground level, is competitive in the air, and while she can get knocked off the ball at times, bounces back up to impact the next contest. Not the finished product just yet, Fursland is usually tasked with the kickouts or being the first option in order to deliver cleanly further afield. An effective ball user.

#33 Sienna Bilinski

Stats: 16 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 1 clearance, 4 rebound 50s

A promising double bottom-ager who has caught the eye in recent weeks, Bilinski was stationed in defence on the weekend so saw plenty of action. Her penetrating kick out of the back half was a valuable addition to the Falcons’ defensive half, and she will often accompany that with some hard running to get to the next contest. Competes in the air and at ground well, acquitting herself against more experienced opponents.
