SNAPSHOT: “A proven performer with the ability to create smart plays whether it be in the midfield or up forward, Jesse Dattoli looks to be another strongly considered prospect come draft time with his classy ball use.” – Adrian Dixon

The Dattoli surname has been well known in footballing circles in the Melbourne’s North and throughout the APS football competition over many years. It looks very much likely it will become even more renowned come November with Jesse Dattoli making his way to an AFL list. The crafty midfielder-forward was a proven performer in both positions with the Northern Knights and at school football level with Carey Grammar.

Dattoli first represented the Northern Knights Boys Under 18s in 2022 as a sixteen-year-old after good form for junior club Ivanhoe, where he managed 28 goals from 12 games. He represented the Knights on four occasions and played a key role on the outside, backing himself and utilising his cleanliness and creativity as they fell agonisingly short of reaching a preliminary final.

In 2023, Dattoli would continue to juggle his commitments with the Knights and Carey Grammar, and had a hot start to the season with a strong performance in the opening four rounds which included a four-goal haul against Murray Bushrangers on the road in Round 2.

His strong form as a bottom-ager would result in a call up to the Vic Metro squad in June to take on South Australia where he managed an admirable 13 disposals and a goal. Dattoli would return for two more games in the Coates Talent League during school holidays, however wouldn’t return for the postseason games due to injury. He averaged 16 disposals from his six games for the Knights.

Heading into the 2024 season, Dattoli needed to produce consistency to be one step closer to achieving his dream of being drafted and when returning to preseason, it was well and truly duly noted he was fitter and stronger making him all the more determined to make every post a winner.

He went on to average 23 disposals per game with the Knights and managed to make an appearance in all four games for Vic Metro as they ended up winning the Under 18 National Championships. Dattoli was also a constant driving force for Carey in the APS competition and stood up for both postseason games for the Knights where they again fell agonisingly short of a preliminary final.

Dattoli has been compared to Adelaide youngster Josh Rachele and has also drawn similarities to GWS Giants captain Toby Greene. It could also be argued too he is a similar player to two current Collingwood stars who are also Carey Grammar alumni in Josh Daicos and Jordan de Goey.

STRENGTHS:

+ Accumulation
+ Creativity
+ Forward craft
+ Goal sense
+ Running patterns
+ Versatility

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Decision making
- Set shot goalkicking
- Size

Dattoli’s versatility with the ability to hit the scoreboard makes him a prospect for many clubs, but also the fact he can be used in more than one position with great effect shows how much upside he has to impact sooner than others at the next level. While not usually an outside midfielder, Dattoli performed the wing role for Vic Metro at times, especially in the decider. While it wasn’t a high possession game for him or his teammates, Dattoli finished with 20 touches in the final, playing a key linking role running up and down the wing showing his strong running in transition and finished with a total of 320 metres gained, second to Jagga Smith. Dattoli’s coverage of the ground was a highlight of the season for the Knights.

Dattoli’s creativity was also on display in both postseason games. After his Knights were beaten at home by the Ranges the previous week, in non-ideal conditions at Ballarat he produced his best performance of the season in the Wildcard Round game which reversed the previous week's result. While his influence in the quarter final against Oakleigh was quelled being up against, he still managed to show his effectiveness from the limited opportunities provided to him, especially by hand. While not known to be a prolific tackler either, he had his highest tackle counts individually throughout the season with six in the Wildcard game and five in the quarter final.

His consistency was also shown throughout the season averaging 23 disposals from just the seven games never managing less than 15 disposals and managed to hit the scoreboard on all seven occasions too, with the only occasion he was held goalless being against the Chargers in that quarter final where he could only muster two behinds.

While Dattoli does lack a bit of height and is lightly framed, he will be able to have the benefits knowing what a strong preseason can do to ensure he can compete at the highest level when he seizes the opportunity, so that area of improvement will come. Another area of improvement for Dattoli though is his set shot kicking for goal. In the championships in both games based in Melbourne, played in both wet and day conditions, he missed a few gettable set shot kicks for goal, highlighting that as an area of improvement in games that were both hotly contested.

While Dattoli has been known for his creativity, decision making is another area of improvement. Throughout the season, there were times where he did turn the ball over and where he could have gone for better options in front of goal as opposed to going for goal, and vice-versa.

DRAFT RANGE: 15-30

SUMMARY:

Dattoli’s proven ability to run between both the inside and outside midfield and up forward, along with his creativity and consistency, will give clubs plenty to think about come draft night. His preparation for the 2024 season has held him in good stead to give him the best chance possible of being drafted and that will go a long way in him succeeding at the next level. Could he join a long list of Carey Grammar alumini at the Pies, or could he be another player considered to fill a small forward need the Western Bulldogs who can also go into the midfield? His running ability may even be suited to the wide grounds out west at either West Coast or Fremantle.
