SNAPSHOT: “A hard-nosed midfielder and surging defender capable of chaining possessions with repeat running bursts and high work rate.” – Michael Alvaro
Few prospects fit the mould of a genuine workhorse better than Oliver Warburton. The Shepparton Swans product is tied to Murray Bushrangers but spends plenty of time in the big smoke, boarding at Caulfield Grammar School. He made his Coates Talent League debut in 2022 as a 16-year-old, going on to make eight appearances for the Bushies as a bottom-ager and seven this year between his representative and school commitments.
Warburton has been a staple of Vic Country squads over the last three seasons. He donned the Big V at Under 16, 17, and 18 level, while also being selected to partake in the 2023 National Futures showcase on AFL Grand Final day. A call-up for Collingwood’s VFL side came Warburton’s way late in his top-age campaign, debuting with 15 touches in Round 18 and returning for a second appearance in Round 20.
He went from strength to strength at CTL level, too. Having settled down back, he averaged 28.7 disposals in his last block of three games, including a season-high 32 disposals and 10 rebound 50s against Gippsland Power in Wildcard Round. That was one of three 30-plus disposal efforts in his seven outings. The Sydney Swans fan draws inspiration from Chad Warner for his run and ball use, along with Joel Selwood‘s leadership.
PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:
STRENGTHS:
+ Effort
+ Consistency
+ Production
+ Rebounding
+ Work rate
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Composure
- Kicking consistency
Warburton is a rebound running machine off half-back, where he arguably played his best footy in 2024. While he didn't set the world alight at the National Draft Combine, his style of play presents a strong speed-endurance mix and constant motion. Whether chasing up his own kick-ins, overlapping to receive, or carrying the ball with dare, Warburton offers plenty of drive out of the backline in repeat bursts.
The 185cm prospect can hardly be faulted for effort. His work rate and intensity are also evident when rolling through midfield. There, he is a little more handball happy than in defence where his main distributive method is by foot. In both roles, Warburton is a high production player who can rack up possessions in chains and combine with teammates on the way forward. It's why often times he will quite easily end up with 25-30 disposals.
Warburton's surge style and work rate lend to his consistent output. He is regarded as a professional athlete who leaves no stone unturned in his preparation, and that translates to his performance on-field. Playing in such a high gear sometimes compromises his composure and efficiency, though. Warburton is capable of kicking neatly in the short range, or penetrating long, but is prone to dump kicking or producing clangers from time to time.
During preseason, Warburton was also looking to add some strings to his bow. Marking and second efforts were among them, and he can still boost his numbers having averaged 2.4 marks and 1.4 tackles at Coates Talent League level this year. A lot of his best work and most impactful plays are performed on the way forward, demanding possession and looking to carve out transitions. The extra elements will round out his game.
DRAFT RANGE: 40-60
SUMMARY:
Running power is an important facet in the modern game and Warburton has it in spades. Clubs will hold his effort and work rate in high regard, along with his ability to break the lines when rebounding. While his disposal could be sharpened up a touch, Warburton remains an effective ball mover and will provide four-quarter effort. Being able to double as a midfielder and impact in each third of the ground are also feathers in his cap. Expect him to be considered late in the piece on draft night, given competition for spots is quite high in a very even crop this year.
