SNAPSHOT: “A highly-skilled and versatile player who has long been touted as one to watch in this year’s AFLW Draft class.”

Sophie Eaton is a player who could simply explode at the next level, and while she had her interruptions and inconsistencies in her top-age season, is a damaging and talented prospect with ball in hand. The saying ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’ applies perfectly to Eaton in this sense, with the talented South Australian considered the top one from her state, particularly with her potential.

Eaton’s football journey started like many others, playing alongside the boys at Freeling, and then moved between there and Kapunda over the next few seasons. In 2022 aged just 15, Eaton was running around for Freeling seniors and starring with 16 goals in 15 games and named among the best seven times. In the same season, she booted 17 goals in 12 games at Under 16.5 level after crossing from Hamley Bridge where she was simply too good for that level.

Her performances throughout that season catapulted Eaton onto every radar, and she was zoned into Central District where she played 13 games in a memorable season. At just 16 years of age, Eaton played a key role in the Bulldogs’ flag, while also captaining South Australia at the Under 16 Development Championships, and winning the MVP in that successful carnival.

Incredibly, Eaton got the call-up to represent the tri-colours at Under 18s level, kicking a goal in both of the games she played, while averaging nine disposals and two inside 50s. With plenty of expectation entering her bottom-age campaign, Eaton largely played forward – while rolling up the ground – for Central District, kicking nine majors in 15 games and averaging 8.2 disposals, 2.1 marks, 2.7 tackles and 1.9 inside 50s.

On the national stage, Eaton covered some ground off a wing and also up forward, finishing with 15.3 disposals, 3.3 marks, 2.3 tackles and 4.0 inside 50s in another logical progression for the talented teenager. Her performances over the last couple of seasons unsurprisingly saw Eaton secure a National Academy spot, and had a big year ahead.

Unfortunately injury midway through the year meant she was restricted to just two games at the national championships and 10 for the Bulldogs at SANFLW level. In the former, she largely played out of defence, racking up 16.0 disposals, 2.0 marks and 6.5 rebound 50s, further showing her versatility after playing in the other thirds the last couple of seasons.

For Central District, Eaton averaged 14.1 disposals, 2.4 marks, 4.2 tackles and 2.3 inside 50s, but had some highs and lows, starting the year in incredible form, before having a couple of really quite games. She picked up to have a few eye-catching performances, but there was still some inconsistency through the course of the year.

Regardless, Eaton’s body of work over the last three years speaks for itself and earned her a National Draft Combine invite.

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Physicality
- Strength
- Consistency

When Eaton is fit and firing, she is one of the first players you want the ball in the hands of going inside 50. Boasting elite skills, great decision making and superb vision, Eaton can spot out a target before most, and execute the tricky pass too. Her ball use is her bread and butter, and teams look to utilise that by making her the facilitator going forward.

Opposition coaches in the SANFLW regularly had plans to quell her influence with Woodville-West Torrens coach Narelle Smith declaring Eaton the one player she would choose if given the ability to pick anyone in the competition to add to her list. High praise for a talented teenager who has shown her incredible ability in patches, but really exemplified it in years gone by.

From the age of 16 it was very obvious Eaton was a future AFLW player, hitting passes that few others can, and not only that, but creating nice run-and-carry which allows her to fill out any position. She spent 2025 off half-back for the Croweaters, but still played midfielder/forward for Central District, while having also spent time off a wing in the past. Essentially, she can be deployed everywhere, and it would not be going out on a limb to suggest if there was a way to clone her, the Bulldogs would have tried.

While Eaton's game is built around the work she does with ball in hand, her smarts do allow her to get into ball-winning positions, particularly when forward. She is still developing that inside craft against senior bodies, though at Under 16s level she was huge at the coalface. It is likely if Eaton develops into a midfielder at AFLW level, she will have to build up her strength and therefore physicality.

Given she is a Rolls Royce with ball in hand, Eaton is not the player you want getting her hands dirty at ground level. If in the midfield, she should be the one receiving the second or even third possession, then running clear and delivering lace-out inside 50. Essentially, give her the ball and let her cook. She is a facilitator and distributor, but can equally finish on goal as she showed in her bottom-age campaign for the Bulldogs.

Overall, Eaton still has to build the body that will compete with bigger opposition players at the elite level, and can be a confidence player at times. However if she finds her best form, then she will be a highlight reel waiting to happen, with her sizzling kicks and outstanding field of play reading ability holding her in terrific stead for the future.

DRAFT RANGE: 10-25

SUMMARY:

Sophie Eaton did not quite have the season she would have liked at the start of the season, but it was still okay, and the traits she possesses are far harder for clubs to teach than many others. Expect Eaton to be amongst the first round calculations, with her upside the key element which could see her go higher, but if she sneaks into the second round then it will be a real steal for whoever picks her up.
