SNAPSHOT: “An ultra-consistent midfielder with superb stoppage craft and strong two-way work rate.” – Michael Alvaro

Daniel Annable’s junior career has been as consistent as they come. He burst onto the scene in his Under 16 year, turning out for the Lions Academy in four Coates Talent League games before leaping onto the representative stage. There, he captained Brisbane to the Pool B title as its Most Valuable Player and was duly named in the All-Australian side.

After a full bottom-age campaign with the Allies last year, he followed through in his top-age season to again claim All-Australian honours and finish second in the Larke Medal. He skippered the AFL Academy and was best on ground in game one against Richmond VFL, going on to play eight VFL appearances with the Lions for an average 21.3 disposals per game.

Annable’s journey with the Lions is now coming full circle. He has been part of the Academy setup since he was 12 years old and is now on the cusp of hitting the top level. The 18-year-old has spent time training with the senior group and models his game off Lachie Neale, who just co-captained the Lions to consecutive premierships. Soon, they’ll be teammates.

STRENGTHS:

+ Clean hands
+ Competitiveness
+ Consistency
+ Running power
+ Stoppage craft
+ Work rate

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking under pressure
- Flair

Annable is as well-rounded as midfielders come and has honed his craft at a high level for many years. At his core, he's a clean contested ball winner who thrives in stoppage situations. His extraction work is one-touch, and he prides himself on being able to remain poised in traffic before releasing teammates into space. He's generally flawless by hand and sets a strong tone around the ball with his clearance craft.

The Lions Academy star has more recently added weapons to his bow. His two-way effort at the source has developed into two-way running power around the ground. In particular, his ability to chain possessions in the attacking phase has helped increase his hurt factor. Further to that, Annable has begun to hit the scoreboard semi-regularly as performs well as a high forward. He has built a handy knack for snapping forward 50 stoppage goals, too.

Being able to show versatility has only boosted Annable's stocks, and will be pleasing for the Lions given their already brimming midfield group. Spending more time forward will likely allow him to break into the senior team a little quicker. Though, the midfield is where Annable shines and he held his own there during eight VFL games. In a mark of his consistency, he had over 20 touches five times with a high of 28.

Annable has maintained that kind of level not just throughout this year, but for several seasons with the Lions. Even as a 16-year-old he averaged 21 touches and five tackles in his Coates Talent League stint. That kind of output has been part and parcel of Annable's game ever since. He's as reliable as they come and always delivers as advertised - even in big moments.

Other prospects may have Annable covered for speed, flair and flashiness, but he's more of your meat and three veg type. Kicking is an area he has been working on with the likes of Grant Birchalllooking to align his poise when going by hand with how he uses the ball by foot. While capable of delivering sharp short kicks, he can sometimes waver with his execution under pressure and on the run. That's natural being a more inside-leaning midfielder, but there are always ways to get better and become more of a threat to the opposition.

DRAFT RANGE: 3-6

SUMMARY:

Annable has been locked in the top five throughout the year, proving the most consistent high performer of the crop. The first half-dozen prospects are generally a consensus bunch this year, but where Annable falls amongst them remains to be seen. His reliability and craft would appeal to clubs with such an early pick in the open draft, although being Academy-tied may impact how soon the trigger is pulled on a bid.
