SNAPSHOT: “The top West Australian prospect this year, offering a blend of size and explosive athletic traits in midfield to go with his acumen as a defender.” – Denholm Melrose
West Australian captain Bo Allan has had a stellar top-age season that saw him lead his state to an impressive and expectation-exceeding National Championships campaign, and finish with a premiership in Peel Thunder’s WAFL League side at Optus Stadium. A senior level flag is something only he of all draft prospects can lay claim to in 2024.
The Halls Head product was named in the AFL’s National Academy team this year after finishing his bottom-age season as a representative of Team Naitanui in the Under 17 Futures match. Allan completed 2024 with two Colts games and 11 League games for Peel Thunder, looking comfortable at the top level and proving he is a class above when it comes to West Australian talent this year.
PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:
STRENGTHS:
+ Contested game
+ Explosive speed
+ Kick penetration
+ Leadership
+ Physicality
+ Versatility
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Decision making
- Midfield craft
A ready-made, powerful midfielder, Allan has plied his trade at the coalface and off half-back for Peel Thunder in 2024. From half-back he offers run and carry, coupled with clean ball use by foot and great vision to pick off targets at speed. Through the midfield, Allan’s one-wood is his contested game.
He defends hard, closes opponents down quickly with pace, and tackles with intent. Once his side has won the football he uses his big frame to drive his legs and burst away from stoppages, then launch the ball deep inside 50.
Allan plays with confidence and dare that encourages him to break tackles, bust through packs and explode into space. Even at WAFL League level he showed an innate ability to shrug off would-be tacklers, including established senior and ex-AFL players.
Allan was consistent at whatever level he played at throughout the year; averaging 20 disposals and six tackles per game for Western Australia, 21 disposals and 5.5 marks for Peel Thunder’s Colts side, and 11.5 disposals for their League side.
He was also a member of the AFL Academy squad for 2024, missing the game against Coburg through injury but returning against Footscray VFL.
At the next level it can be expected that with his larger frame and senior experience, it should not take long for Allan to break into an AFL side. He has his defensive acumen to lean on, but projects as a big-bodied midfielder who can be relied on both offensively and defensively - think Jordan Dawson and Reuben Ginbey.
In the way of improvements, Allan is still developing his midfield craft and off-ball running. Being able to lean on Fremantle-listed players at Peel has only aided his development, and he built a strong platform with his brief Colts stint there after making his senior debut down back.
While able to play in a high gear, Allan can also refine his decision making, knowing when to go or control the play. His kicking on the run is penetrating, but perhaps could also be refined to make best use of his ability to possess the ball in dangerous launch zones.
DRAFT RANGE: 8-15
SUMMARY:
Allan firms as an early pick in the draft, projected to be selected in the opening round of November’s intake. The big-bodied midfielder offers a great mix of strength and speed, paired with excellent football IQ and leadership qualities. AFL clubs will love the traits he brings and will hope that, with his ready-made frame, Allan can make an impact right away. He is a Fremantle supporter and has already waxed with a few Dockers at WAFL level, but will fit in anywhere. Expect him to feature as a defender early on before ramping up his midfield development, where he should play long-term.
