SNAPSHOT: “A midfield workhorse with unmatched endurance and the ability to accumulate possessions at will.” – Michael Alvaro
Jack Dalton is a consummate professional. The Sandringham Dragons running machine has had his fair share of setbacks, but continues to show up and excel. At Under 16 level in 2023, he captained Vic Metro to the National Championships title and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. He went on to make his Coates Talent League debut and looked primed for a stellar bottom-age campaign.
Then came speed bump number one. Dalton rocked up to the CTL preseason testing day in a moon boot last year, still in good spirits but suffering from a navicular stress fracture injury. He got back on the field later that year to play a part of Sandringham’s third consecutive flag. In a sign of his mentality, he then equalled the all-time Yo-Yo Test record (22.4) at this year’s preseason testing meet.
Then came speed bump number two. A freak gym accident saw Dalton snap both of his wrists, originally slated for a 12-month recovery. Instead, the determined prospect made his return 11 weeks later and played three games at the Under 18 National Championships. His exemplary form for Sandringham Dragons saw him earn Team of the Year selection, and fifth place in the Morrish Medal.
Dalton is renowned for his running and does much of his track work alongside teammate Xavier Bamert. He also comes from good footballing pedigree, with his grandfather Paul Briglia a 16-game player at South Melbourne. It’s the reason why Dalton is a Swans fan, modelling part of his game on current star Errol Gulden – for his work rate and foot skills.

STRENGTHS:
+ Accumulation
+ Competitiveness
+ Consistency
+ Endurance
+ Inside-outside balance
+ Work rate
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Explosive speed
- Kicking on the run
Dalton has traits which live up to the standards of modern footy. His running power alone is a highly desirable attribute and he arguably leads the draft crop in that area. His fitness testing results translate on-field, where he works over his opponents on the spread. Whether dropping back to support ball movement out of defence or charging through the corridor to launch inside 50, he's a player who connects the lines relentlessly.
The terms 'workhorse' and 'running machine' are often aligned to Dalton as a result. His endurance is an asset which lends to his high rate of accumulation, and consistently high disposal hauls each week. It helped him get straight back into his work off a relatively long-term injury this year, averaging 28.5 disposals across eight games. He had a lazy 35 touches in his first game back, no less.
While capable of racking up possessions on the outside, Dalton is an incredibly balanced ball winner. He is renowned for his clean ground level work at the contest, often punching above his weight in stoppage situations. Further to his clearance feats, Dalton is a fierce tackler and averaged 5.4 per game in the Coates Talent League. It's part of what makes him such a strong all-round competitor and leader.
If not for his running ability, Dalton's attitude would be his most distinguishable trait. He puts it all on the line each time he's out there and demands high standards of his teammates, often being among the more vocal players afield. Being able to lead by example aids that trait, with Dalton being one of the more professional 18-year-olds you're likely to see - on and off the field.
In terms of improvement areas, while Dalton covers plenty of ground, he has identified explosive speed as a deficiency. Being on the smaller side makes breaking away from the contest a little more difficult without that raw pace. It's also something that impacts his disposal. Dalton gets into all the right spots to be a damaging launch player, but he can work on executing kicks on the run or under pressure to compound his effectiveness.
DRAFT RANGE: 30-45
SUMMARY:
Recruiters favour winners and Dalton is exactly that. He overcame repeat adversity and showed serious determination to make every post a winner over the last year, boosting his stocks with consistently high-level performances. On top of his first rate attitude, Dalton’s running capacity and inside-outside balance are traits which will almost inevitably see him earn a spot at AFL level in the current age. While he still has a few things to work on, his best traits should be enough to entice a club around the round two range.
