A NEW name and a new format, the 2024 Marsh AFL National Development Championships for the Under 16 Girls will commence tomorrow. Featuring two pools – one of six teams and one of four teams – each state or Academy will play two matches running from April 7-15.
Pool A features the usual top four sides in South Australia, Western Australia and the two Victorian teams – Metro and Country – but this year includes Brisbane Lions Academy and Gold Coast Suns Academy, testament to the growth and strength of Queensland football. At Under 18s level, Queensland has its own state, unlike in the boys where the Sunshine State is combined with the other Allied states.
In Pool B, Northern Territory and Tasmania are joined by the GWS Giants Academy and Sydney Swans Academy. The teams that finish top of the standings for each pool will be crowned title winners, with percentage the differing factor if more than one team finishes on top and did not get to play each other. If they did play each other, the winner from that match will be crowned champion.
At the conclusion of the carnival, each team will select its own MVP, with an overall MVP and All-Australian team selected by a panel comprising AFL Talent Pathways staff and AFLW recruiters.
The action kicks off tomorrow across two states, with South Australia taking on Vic Metro at Prospect Oval, while a double-header takes place in Victoria at Trevor Barker Oval. Vic Country hosts Brisbane Lions Academy, while Gold Coast Suns Academy takes on Western Australia.
The all-Victorian clash will head to Shepparton for a second successive year, meeting from midday on Thursday at Deakin Reserve, while South Australia and Western Australia face off at Thebarton Oval next Sunday, April 14. The Queensland Northern Academies will play off on Saturday, with the Giants and Swans Academies each playing a match against Northern Territory and Tasmania.
STREAMING AND SQUADS: All matches will be live streamed on the AFL Play YouTube channel. Visit this page to access the live streams and to view squad lists.
