WET weather was a theme of the Coates Talent League Girls Round 7 action, with five of the six games played across Victoria, four of which came on a rain-affected Sunday. We took note of some of the top performers from each of the matches with notes the opinion of the individual author.

Oakleigh Chargers 9.7 (61) defeated Western Jets 1.5 (11)

OAKLEIGH CHARGERS:

#2 Sarah Poustie

Stats: 23 disposals, 3 marks, 14 tackles, 5 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 1 goal

The versatile midfielder started on-ball and was busy from the first bounce to the final siren. She has had higher production games, but impacted consistently around the ground. In the opening term after missing a shot on goal, Poustie was quick to make the most of her second chance a moment last, putting it through the big sticks coming out of a forward stoppage. Overall her decision making by foot and vision was very good, even if the passing was not as precision as it could be.

#3 Sienna Tallariti

The skipper led from the front and was arguably the best of the Chargers for her organisation and being able to hardly ever make a mistake by hand or foot. She gets into the right spots, helps out in defence and then clears the danger with a booming kick. Tallariti used her body well one-on-one and is always composed with ball-in-hand, setting up a goal with her sole inside 50 late in the first term. An all-round natural footballer.

#6 Maggie Mahony

After her mammoth game the week before, Mahony was again industrious, staring on-ball and winning the first clearance of the day hitting a target at half-forward. She was busy throughout, constantly a prime mover and applying plenty of tackles around the ground. Her competitiveness was on show later in the first quarter winning a one-on-on-three to lock the ball up with a strong tackle. Throughout the game her release by hand and general decision making was a huge tick.

#9 Chloe Bown
Forward/Midfielder | 174cm | 20/12/2007

Stats: 20 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles, 4 inside 50s

The bottom-ager was busy both offensively and defensively across the course of the game and put her body on the line time and time again. She has a nice first few steps to gain separation on her opponent and though she has a tendency to blaze away, has great vision as she showed to set up a couple of Gladman set shots.

#14 Chloe Thorn

Stats: 23 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 1 inside 50, 6 rebound 50s

One of the standouts in defence, Thorn worked in tandem with Tallariti by clearing it from the back 50 and getting it to safety. She was proactive and aggressive in the way she ran and attacked the loose ball, but also took a couple of intercept marks as well. Arguably her best game for the Chargers, Thorn is more than competent of copping body contact and bouncing straight back up, and her drive consistently kept the ball moving in transition.

#18 Bailee Martin

A crafty double bottom-ager, Martin has reliable leading patterns inside 50 and strong hands, with a nice turn of pace over the few couple of metres. She set up a goal to Gladman late in the first term via her quick hands, and kicked one of her own early in the fourth quarter via a clever snap. Not afraid to get her hands dirty, Martin also took forward ruck stoppages, doing a bit of everything in the game.

#21 Amelie Gladman

Stats: 14 disposals, 6 marks, 1 tackle, 2 inside 50s, 3 goals, 1 behind

Possibly Gladman’s best performance since her nine-goal haul against Bendigo Pioneers last year, the medium forward stepped up in the absence of Emma McDonald to be the only multiple goalkicker on the ground with three majors. Her forward craft is outstanding, leading into pockets of space, and taking it safety. She often clutched it securely on the chest, but considering the dewy conditions made sense. Gladman was certainly a consistent performer throughout the match.

WESTERN JETS:

#8 Charlotte Miller
Wing | 170cm | 11/10/2007

Stats: 16 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 1 inside 50

A hard-running player, Miller held a strong line on the outside and was often opposed to Emma Stark. Still a bit raw with her final execution, Miller was quick by hand and covered the ground well. She competed both in the air and at ground level, and laid a great tackle on Poustie to dispossess her and win the free kick.

#9 Sierra Grieves

Stats: 40 disposals, 4 marks, 7 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 6 rebound 50s, 1 behind

Another week, another Grieves ball-winning clinic. The top-ager brought her own footy to ETU Stadium, collecting 40 disposals and providing run and drive around the ground. Her work rate was phenomenal and though at times she can throw the ball on the boot around the stoppage, her craft to get into the right spots is spot on. She had a shot on goal early in the second term that missed, but continued winning it in all thirds of the ground and was clearly best-on.

#11 Lou-Lou Field

Stats: 11 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 6 rebound 50s

Returning to the side, Field suited up in defence and was able to offer resistance against the strong Oakleigh attack. Often taking the kickouts or being the next kick in the chain, she cleared the ball from danger. At times her booming left boot can be a little hit on miss as she looks for those high-risk, high-reward kicks, but when it comes off, she can break down the opposition defensive zone.

#30 Alex McBride-Loane

The bottom-ager had her fair share of the ball and moments through the ruck after starting in defence, winning a clearance midway through the second quarter, then getting back to help out in defence. Late in the opening quarter she saved a goal by marking a Martin snap in the goalsquare and continued to apply body-on-body pressure in marking contests and holding a good line in. the defensive 50.

CALDER CANNONS:

#1 Maddison Albrecht
Forward/Wing | 160cm | 07/09/2006

Stats: 12 disposals, 1 mark, 5 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50

In a tough day out for the Cannons, Albrecht never stopped trying. She had a couple of terrific run-down tackles and provided much needed defensive pressure around the ground. She played high up the ground and got to the outside to provide an option, but was not overawed by the Suns Academy bigger bodies.

#30 Kyla Forbes

Forbes played in all thirds of the ground, but found her calling helping out in defence, particularly in the second half. The top-age Vic Metro hub member even found herself taking the kickouts, which at one stage included kicking to half-back then following up to mark again and kick further afield. She found more touches than any other Cannon and was consistently looking to get the ball moving in transition.

SUNS ACADEMY:

#4 Heidi Talbot

Stats: 25 disposals, 2 marks, 7 tackles, 8 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 behind

Talbot has pieced together a trio of really strong games playing off half-back, playing a much higher role against the Cannons. The North Cairns product is an outstanding runner with great speed, making her hard to shutdown throughout four quarters, with Talbot running harder than most at the end of games. At times her execution can be a little rushed, but her metres gained and willingness to attack the contest with enormous vigour makes up for it.

#15 Sunny Lappin

Stats: 15 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle, 4 inside 50s, 1 goal

The player aligned to three clubs – the Gold Coast Suns and then Carlton and St Kilda through the father-daughter rule – popped up to have her moments throughout the game and was able to impact in the front half of the ground. She lowered her eyes going inside 50, and while she was not a massive accumulator, is quick to dispose of it by hand and looked dangerous, kicking a nice goal to-boot.

#17 Alannah Welsh

Stats: 19 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50, 4 goals, 10 behinds

Playing the traditional full-forward role, Welsh had more chances than most in front of the big sticks, snapping them from everywhere. She was unlucky with quite a few chances – hitting the post four times – and finished with four goals from 14 scoring shots. She seemed more consistent with her set shots, but did kick her best major early in the game with a dribbler from the pocket. Could have passed off a couple to others in better positions, but has the potential to be that big moment player.

#22 Tara Harrington

Stats: 22 disposals, 2 tackles, 4 inside 50s

Harrington returned to the side and just played her role. She is neat by hand or foot, wins a lot of ball on the inside and anticipates plays before they happen. One of the better exponents of the long handball, Harrington gets into the right spots to win the ball and get it inside 50 several times.

#23 Mia Salisbury

Stats: 29 disposals, 4 marks, 7 tackles, 3 inside 50s

Salisbury continues to find the ball around the ground, often winning it in close and extracting it to teammates on the outside, before spreading into space to be a marking option. Having transitioned from defender to midfielder this season, Salisbury is similar to Harrington in the way she just plays her role and does it well. Always seemingly having time in possession, she assesses and picks the right extraction option.

#29 Georja Davies

It was a fantastic display from Davies who was arguably best on ground rotating between ruck and forward. She also rolls up to stoppages as a midfielder at times, but it was her aerial ability around the ground that stood out. She clunked seven marks and was too strong and clean above her head for her opponents, often out-sizing them comfortably. However even at ground level she had the edge, dancing one way then the other to get around others, which is how her first goal came about after a sidestep from 50m and then the composure to finish. Her second was off hands on the goalsquare from point blank range running in up the other end.

#30 Havana Harris

Harris teamed up well with Davies as that tall roaming option in the forward half and finished the game with an outstanding 34 touches and two goals. She did her best work winning it in space or applying defensive pressure then belting the ball forward inside 50. She chopped out in the ruck, provided a target inside 50, and then went for the occasional run forward. In the end she ticked just about every box and showed why she is a pick one contender.

#1 Isabella Davies

Stats: 25 disposals, 4 marks, 11 tackles, 6 rebound 50s

Spending plenty of time on the ball, Davies was tough in a game that required plenty of grit. She recorded a game-high 25 touches, balancing her disposals by hand and foot and putting herself in strong positions to win the football. Davies’ tackling was also a highlight, putting an emphasis on pinning the arm whenever she could and was rewarded for her efforts, capping off a really strong performance.

#4 Elise Cook
Midfielder | 170cm | 28/01/2006

Stats: 16 disposals, 1 mark, 11 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Although it is not a noted part of her game, Cook adapted to the conditions and looked to put defensive pressure on the opposition. Around stoppages, the conditions did not suit her clean style of play, but she still made an impact by stopping the Knights from pushing the ball forward. Late in the game, Cook set up just behind stoppages and ensured no goals leaked out the back, showing how strong her defensive mindset was, and helping her side to victory

#15 Millie Lang

Lang worked tirelessly both ways for the Rebels and was often clean when others were not, whether it was with her disposal or when picking up the ball. Offering class despite the conditions not being kind, Lang delivered plenty of overlap run and showed her composure by foot, finding hit up targets further up the field and often beat her opponent to the ball with excellent speed by foot, and was crucial to the Rebels holding on.

NORTHERN KNIGHTS:

#4 Holly Ridewood

Stats: 21 disposals, 1 mark, 11 tackles, 8 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

The Knights skipper was at her productive best once again in a tough loss to the Rebels, and was inspiring at times in her pursuit to drive the ball forward. Having shown the capability to win the ball at the coalface, her biggest strength was her spread from the contest, providing an option whenever the Knights could win the ball or create a free kick with a strong tackle (Ridewood laid 11 of her own). The penetration on her kick proved to be a big weapon for Northern in helping the team gain valuable territory, and helped put the pressure on late in the game.

#5 Zoe Hargreaves

Stats: 21 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles, 5 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s

Hargreaves popped up everywhere for the Knights, and worked extremely hard both ways to accumulate crucial disposals in both halves of the ground. Once again, her size was a massive advantage around stoppages, often using her reach to get first hands on the live ball and using her strength to get boot on ball. Although not always effective with her kicks, it was a crucial cog in helping the Knights keep pushing the ball forward throughout the match, and despite GWV’s best efforts, her ability to pop up and boot the ball forward almost won the game for Northern.

#10 Katelyn Busuttil

The bottom-ager may not have found as much of the ball as previous weeks, but her defensive pressure was outstanding and added another dimension to the Knights’ engine room. Although caught behind at times at stoppages, Busuttil wrapped up whatever opponent she was standing, and laid the most tackles of any player on the field. She still found her fair share of footy, often winning the ball in contested situations, but it was her tackling that stood out the most.

DANDENONG STINGRAYS:

#3 Jemma Reynolds
Midfielder/Forward | 163cm | 29/04/2006

Stats: 30 disposals, 2 marks, 8 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Despite the wet conditions, Reynolds was her usual clean self, showing she could win it in the wet as well a she can in the dry. She moved effectively out of traffic and also got to work defensively, being composed with ball-in-hand. At times she can dump kick under pressure, but considering the conditions, it was a benefit, though Reynolds is at her most dangerous when able to be that second possession winner with a burst of speed.

#11 Kayla Dalgleish

Stats: 25 disposals, 2 marks, 7 tackles, 7 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Dalgleish buzzed around the ground and was consistently industrious, applying great defensive pressure to go with her ball-winning skills. She played through midfield and rotated forward, starting on the inside in the second term to try and get her side going. She dropped a chest mark early in the match and did have to rush on a number of instances by foot, but also delivered a lovely weighted kick deep inside 50 early in the third term.

#13 Nikita Harris

A natural first possession winner who works well with Reynolds on-ball, Harris is not afraid to get her hands dirty, and also apply immense pressure. Laying double-digit tackles, Harris won her fair share of the ball, and while at times pressure forced some turnovers, she had a great play spinning out of congestion to dish off a handball midway through the match. Remains a key member of the Stingrays’ midfield.

LIONS ACADEMY:

#2 Molly Ferguson
Forward | 160cm | 20/04/2008

Stats: 11 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 3 inside 50s

The Lions Academy’s Under 16s MVP is a high impact-per-possession player and looked dangerous inside 50. Though she ultimately kicked one behind and an out on the full from a couple of shots, she was clean at ground level and able to use the ball well in the forward half of the ground. Not a huge production game, but caught the eye.

Another talented double bottom-ager, Geere’s contest-to-contest work was eye-catching and she found her fair share of the ball around the ground. Though sometimes she can rush the kick, under the conditions is suited, and she showed her competitiveness with a big bump late in the second term. She has started on-ball quite often for the Lions, and provides that strength and height on the inside with an explosive first few steps.

#12 Isabella McDonough

The inside-outside midfielder has spent more time on-ball as the series has gone on, but also managed to hit the scoreboard. After three goals last week, McDonough added another one off a couple of steps midway through the second term, as well as a behind and one that went well wide and out of bounds. She stands up in tackles and though the wet weather made it tricky, McDonough still ended up as one of the Lions’ best yet again.

The over-age defender played a fantastic four-quarter game and often pushed higher afield to get involved and drive the ball inside 50. She is strong when tackled and able to still clean dispose of the ball, while being clean above her head and at ground level. Her aggressive nature allows her to break lines through power, and after a few impressive games. Roy was arguably best-afield with her all-round approach.

#8 Mekah Morrissy

Stats: 40 disposals, 11 tackles, 5 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s

It was a career-best game for Morrissy who took control in the absence of Sara Howley, bringing her own ball to the wet La Trobe Uni Oval. She amassed 40 touches and laid 11 tackles, but held her width well after spreading from the stoppages. More often than not, Morrissy would start at the stoppage then push wide to potentially intercept dump kicks from the opposition, something that happened on a number of occasions. She ran hard, covered ground with ease and thrived in the conditions to be a clear best on ground.

#27 Seisia White
Forward/Midfielder | 164cm | 07/10/2006

Stats: 13 disposals, 1 mark, 18 tackles, 7 inside 50s, 1 goal

White’s attack on the footy can never be questioned, and like Morrissy was another player who thrived in the wet. She cracked in and laid a whopping 18 tackles and brought the defensive heat, and though she could not get a lot of clean disposals, had a highlight with a goal late in the first term under pressure off a step with the outside of the boot.

#38 Stella Huxtable

The tall left-footer was a terrific clearance player in the win, getting into the right spots and getting it forward with interest which was needed in the conditions. She had a highlight midway through the second term where off a few steps she was able to nail a goal after 10 minutes without a goal. Has clever stoppage craft and does get involved around the ground as well with solid positioning.

GIPPSLAND POWER:

#15 Jasmine Sowden

Stats: 26 disposals, 7 marks, 8 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 behind

The best Power player on the day, Sowden was able to impact the game and stand up as the number one midfielder without Ash Centra there, winning her fair share of the ball and burrowing in at stoppages. She won plenty of clearances – off both sides of her body – took some terrific marks and went forward. Her best chance on goal just pushed to the left that she should have probably nailed, but other than that was strong and consistent throughout and was hard to fault her performance in tough conditions.

#19 Ella Stoddart

Starting in defence and moving into the midfield as has been the case of late, Stoddart showed good strength around the ground and even won it at the coalface and extracted it to space. She kicked Gippsland’s only goal, cleverly slotting it off a step after sitting out the back of a forward 50 stoppage. At times her booming kick can be intercepted, but once again considering the conditions, having the extra meterage helped the cause.

Tasmania Devils 3.2 (20) lost to Eastern Ranges 11.12 (78)

TASMANIA DEVILS:

#1 Mischa Barwin
Forward/Midfielder | 164cm | 04/12/2007

Stats: 11 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 1 goal

While her statline might not be as impressive as past games, Barwin just can’t help but impact games with moments, and while the match was done by the time she put through her goal in the final term, it was still a nice looking set shot that never looked like missing. She set up the Devils’ third and final goal as well a couple of minutes later, having had a big tussle with McMillan in the second half since moving into the middle. Barwin also produced an elite run-down tackle in the first term to win a free kick in an eye-catching moment.

#15 Priya Bowering

Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 1 hitout, 6 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal

Battled on throughout the match and tried her heart out once again. She kicked a classy goal in the second term – the first for the Devils – after pushing hard forward, and continued to impact around stoppages with several clearance wins. Her strength at ground level and in the air was vital and Bowering kept cracking in despite the mounting deficit.

#26 Harriet Bingley
Defender/Midfielder | 172cm | 23/03/2007

Stats: 11 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Like Bowering, Bingley provided strength over the ball when on the inside, having also spent time in defence earlier in the game. She had a couple of nice runs from the back 50 up the ground, and while at times she would turn it over, helped gain crucial meterage with her booming kick. Her fierce tackling was anoth prominent feature of her game.

#29 Mackenzie Williams

Another Tasmanian who might have been a touch down on previous performances, but still had her moments. She provided run and drive out of defence, and after a few mistakes in the first term coming out of defence, picked it up and had some eye-catching runs down the ground. She took a great intercept mark in the second quarter off the first clearance then hit a target long down the wing. One with impressive upside given her power and aggressive gamestyle.

EASTERN RANGES:

#6 Tayla McMillan
Midfielder | 161cm | 25/05/2007

Stats: 22 disposals, 1 mark, 13 tackles, 6 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

The classy midfielder brought her usual heat to the contest, laying 13 tackles and not letting the opposition get away cleanly. She did not have as much space as she would like, but instead caught attention with her lightning quick hands while under pressure to a teammate on the move in the middle of the ground. McMillan was so clean at ground level and read the taps so well, often teaming up with Bamford for set plays.

#7 Stasia Stevenson

It was a promising performance from Stevenson who found plenty of the ball and assisted in transitioning the ball down the ground. Rotating between forward and midfield, Stevenson applied plenty of defensive pressure, and though she missed her first quarter set shot, put the ball into dangerous positions on a umber of occasions. In the end, the top-ager played her role for four quarters.

#10 Jordyn Allen

Stats: 15 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 2 inside 50s

Allen does not need a lot of touches to do damage and this was the case once again. Her day started with a terrific run-down tackle in defence, a role she largely played all game. At times she got higher afield and had some attacking moments such as late in the third term where she marked on the wing, hit up that 45-degree kick into the corridor then ran on to receive the next kick via a mark and nailed the pass inside 50 to Knight to set up a goal.

#11 Grace Belloni

Stats: 25 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 2 hitouts, 4 inside 50s

Belloni has become a fully fledged midfielder of late and she predominantly did that again, winning the ball in close consistently and using her strong frame to block opponents from first possessions at ground level. She was clean at ground level but sometimes rushed by hand or foot, and though Belloni could be more polished, she impacts games through her stoppage work and winning the ball against a strong Tasmanian on-ball division.

#12 Georgia Knight

Stats: 17 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 3 goals, 2 behinds

The medium forward was in the thick of it once again, having five scoring shots and kicking three goals from 17 disposals and five marks.Two of her three goals came from set shots, with her other via a snap around her body, and had there not been a couple of unlucky misses, Knight could have had an even bigger day out. She continues to provide a presence inside 50.

Playing her best game for the year, the Ranges skipper got on the scoreboard after getting boot to ball in a tackle from close range, and most importantly competed all match. Brisbane’s second and third efforts across the ground were admirable and her ability to not just give up once the ball hit the deck was great. Her aggression was back and after a week off she looked refreshed, even taking a bounce at one stage moving in transition and kicking down the ground. Brisbane set up a goal and a couple of other scoring chances across the forward 50.

Parker worked hard all up and down the ground in the wing, providing a target on the outside. At times she can blaze away and go for distance, but her ability to be so agile helps her gain separation on her opponent. She holds at a good line and won it across all thirds of the ground, taking a good mark inside 50 and delivering to Knight in the first term for a goal as one of the highlights.

The bottom-age ruck has been performing well this season and she seemed to take her game to another level against the Devils. She was busy around the ground, and while she won her fair share of hitouts at stoppages, also provided a marking target. She took a huge intercept mark midway through the third term and delivered a lovely kick into Brisbane, then ran-down a much smaller opponent in the fourth term with her set shot from 40m falling short but resulting in a goal anyway.

Vic Metro’s Under 16s MVP was making her Eastern Ranges debut and she certainly did not look out of place. The versatile talent started in defence and rotated into the midfield at times, getting into strong ball-winning positions. Strong overhead with a powerful kick, Anderson is one who will only get better with time and is one to watch for the future.
