Hynes hits the lead in RMC Medal race

DANDENONG Stingrays co-captain Cooper Hynes has hit the lead in this year’s Rookie Me Central Medal count after notching his third best afield performance for the season. The powerful midfielder-forward polled three votes for his 27 disposals and three goals in a win over Oakleigh on Friday night.

Partner in crime Harvey Langford (25 disposals, nine marks, nine tackles, one goal) also stuffed the stats sheet to nab two votes and jump into equal-seventh on the overall leaderboard. Splitting the pair in equal-fourth is their Vic Country teammate and our Round 11 Player of the Week, Tobie Travaglia.

The Bendigo Pioneers utility snared three consecutive goals in the final quarter to nearly drag his side over the line against Sandringham. He also gathered 28 disposals and laid seven tackles having spent most of the game in midfield. A jack of all trades, he can just about play anywhere.

Teammate James Barrat was another standout over the weekend with a move to defence. The tall amassed 10 marks and 12 rebound 50s in a sign he may be required down back for Vic Country. The same can be said for call-up Alix Tauru, who was everywhere in Gippsland’s win over Murray.

Sandringham Dragons ruck Brodie Findlay, who polled a single vote behind Travaglia and Barrat, is also a chance to earn Vic Metro selection. The imposing over-ager won 15 disposals and 23 hitouts to continue a strong run of form as captain, with his side missing a raft of representative stars.

Others to impress in Round 11 include Calder Cannons speedster Isaac Kako, who got the three votes ahead of fellow Vic Metro squad members Christian Moraes and Cody Anderson of Eastern. Geelong’s Cooper Ward got on the board, as did Tasmanian midfielder Dominic Pitt with best afield performances.
