2024 AFLW Draft and Trade dates locked in
THE 2024 AFL Women’s Draft and Trade Period dates were locked in today after the AFL announced the plan for the year ahead. With the upcoming AFLW season just three weeks away, the league determined the AFLW Draft would be held on Monday, December 16, following a six-day Trade Period the week before.
The 2024 AFLW Draft is going national for the first time in history, having previously been state-based, and then an option of state or national nominations. Now, all 18 clubs will have the opportunity to pick up any player within the draft pool.
Into its ninth season, the AFL Women’s kicks off on Friday, August 30 and will run until the AFLW Grand Final on Saturday, November 30. From there, the turnaround for the off-season is quick, with a Restricted Free Agency Period and Delisted Free Agency Period open from Wednesday, December 4 through until Wednesday, December 11.
The Rookie Signing Period – players from other codes who are eligible to sign as rookies – opens for 24 hours where clubs can sign cross-coders, before a second Delisted Free Agency Period runs from December 12-13. Upon completion of that, the 2024 AFLW Draft order is finalised with four days until the draft.
For those players overlooked in December’s draft, clubs have an opportunity to pass on picks and select prospects in the Supplementary Signing Period which opens from Monday, February 3 until Friday, February 28, 2025.
