SNAPSHOT: “A tough inside ball winner with deceptively good agility and a powerful kick.” – Michael Alvaro

Touted as a smokey among Gold Coast’s brimming academy crop, Koby Coulson has made a name for himself in 2025. The uncompromising midfielder models his game on recent Brownlow Medal winner Matt Rowell, and formed an unlikely friendship with Wil Powell as a kid. He is now a step closer to calling them teammates after an exemplary top-age campaign across several levels.

Coulson overcame stress fractures in his Under 16 year to sneak onto the radar as a bottom-ager in 2024. He represented Queensland in the Futures trials and made his VFL debut, before going on to spend a block of preseason training with the senior Suns. Top 10 nationwide scores in the agility test and standing vertical jump proved he was primed for a big 2025 campaign.

Fast forward through more strong football with the Suns Academy, and Coulson was a lock for the Allies squad where he played a full National Championships. There, he averaged 24.3 disposals, 4.8 tackles, and 4.0 clearances to cement his place in the All-Australian team. Coulson stepped up in light of the Allies’ injury crisis to be a consistent figure at the heart of a talented side.

On top of his Under 18 form, the 18-year-old added to his state league resume with six more VFL appearances this year. He was duly invited to the National Draft Combine where recruiters from other clubs had the opportunity to get a closer look at him. Gold Coast’s depth of Academy talent means some may not end up staying at their home base, but Coulson would be hard to pass up.

+ Consistency
+ Contested ball

+ Work rate

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking composure
- Polish

Coulson is an inside midfielder with genuine weapons. His agility and power are desirable traits in the modern game which he uses just about every time he possesses the ball. Coulson plays in short bursts, able to take quick steps or wrong-foot an opponent before disposing He's a neat and creative distributor by hand, but also gains plenty of meterage with penetrating long kicks out of the middle.

Being his side's driving force at the source is central to Coulson's impact. He is a dogged two-way competitor, able to win his own ball or shut down opposition exits from the contest. When in possession, he consistently finds a way forward either by linking up with teammates via hand, or by charging through traffic and dumping the ball inside 50. That kind of surge style doesn't allow the opposition defence to settle.

A good game from Coulson is incredibly high-production, racking up disposals, clearances, and inside 50s at will. While tough and combative on the inside, he leant on his work rate around the ground to add an accumulation factor to his game this year. Running in waves and chaining possessions is central to how many top level teams move the ball, and Coulson has proven capable of getting involved in that manner.

He brings a real 'get up and go again' type of approach, which can drag teammates along for the ride. That style is effective in its directness, although Coulson can still work on adding touches of polish to his skillset. His no-nonsense clearance kicks could sometimes benefit from greater composure, with Coulson having the turn of speed to drive his legs and find space, thus opening up easier targets.

While quite a sharp short kicker, he is prone to blazing away at times. Coulson has also sought to continue improving his one-touch ability at the contest, and put a focus on allowing himself to play a more attacking role at times, rather than being so defensive-minded. The latter has worked nicely, as he hit the scoreboard semi-regularly this season and provided his forwards with quick and deep supply.

DRAFT RANGE: 25-40

SUMMARY:

Coulson has the safety net of being club-tied, although Gold Coast will have some difficult decisions to make when it comes to selecting or omitting its many draftable Academy graduates. That may allow other clubs to pounce on the Queenslander, with his competitive and no-nonsense style delivering consistent results. Coulson’s strong footballing qualities are also complimented by a powerful athletic profile, making him all the more intriguing in the second round mix.
