2024 AFLW Week 5 Preview: Tuesday

WEEK 5 of the 2024 AFL Women’s season and week two of midweek football kicks off tonight with a clash that is important for both sides involved, but for very different reasons.

  • Team
  • Richmond
  • Port Adelaide

7:15pm
Ikon Park

Recent form

Richmond has proven over the last few weeks that its poor week one performance was not a true indicator of where it is at this season and is currently on a three match winning streak.

Port Adelaide meanwhile has had a little bit of an up and down season so far, and will be looking to have a much better performance tonight than they did in their last match.

Last time they met

Although Port has not been in the competition long, it has taken these two two and a half seasons to finally meet in a competitive match in the AFLW.

This means history will be made tonight no matter who wins.

Key stat areas

Richmond prefers to kick the ball more than handball it, while for Port Adelaide it is very much the other way around.

Neither side has been particularly strong in the tackle department, so that probably means tonight’s match probably will not be the congested, continuous tackle fest that we saw from Richmond’s game midweek last week.

One area Richmond can really exploit Port Adelaide is in uncontested possessions. The Tigers have not been competition leaders in this area, but they have been 160 possessions better than Port Adelaide has in this area this season.

Key match up/s

It is going to be the battle of the big forwards tonight. Katie Brennan and Caitlin Greiser up one end of the ground versus Ashleigh Saint and Julia Teakle up the other.

Both sets of players have had excellent starts to the season, and both sets of players will be crucial to their respective sides in their mission to get decent score on the board.
