Port powers past Pies to historic treble

PORT Adelaide has won its third match in a row this AFL Women’s season after defeating Collingwood last night.

“It certainly felt like a gritty win, if that’s probably the best way I can describe it at this point,” Power coach Lauren Arnell said post match.

“Really pleased with our midfield to stick it out and reset at halftime, when it probably felt like Collingwood had the ascendancy going into halftime. I think they’re up on the scoreboard and just for our mids to grind that out when it was an overly contested game of footy.”

The Power has now won three matches in a row for the first time, and Arnell was really happy with the process her team is showing at the moment.

“I think the most pleasing thing about three wins in a row for us is obviously it is the first time we’ve done it, but the process for our group and the way we’re going about it is really pleasing,” Arnell said.

“And I think tonight, speaking to the coaches post game as well, just the way we went about it, there’s been games that like, even probably the Freo game, round three, that we lost here, and we’ve seen Freo continue to get better and better throughout the remainder of the season so far.

“But we did feel like we gave ourselves opportunities to win that game, we didn’t take them, and those gritty styles of game, we probably haven’t won in the past, and so to get the win tonight and make that three in a row is again really pleasing.”

In the third quarter the Power kicked three goals to none and really maximised the wind advantage they had that quarter.

“It’s interesting,” Arnell said upon reflection.

“Obviously the game played out quite a congested style of football, which we would like to open the game up more than that. But yeah, I think we’ve certainly played in windier conditions here at Alberton.”

One of Port Adelaide’s best last night was Matilda Scholz, who also took a stellar mark of the year contender.

“I think certainly the last three or four weeks of footy Matilda Scholz has really come on and she’s still super young,” said Arnell, praising her young ruck.

“I think she’s pretty young, only just came into our side last year as a very fresh faced teenager and the more she learns each week around preparation and diligence in how she prepares for each game, has been really impressive in how she can apply it.

“So yeah, really pleased with her progress and love seeing her take that grab and more so finishing the goal after it was very impressive and just I think a small sign of what Matilda is capable of.”
