Nina’s nice season rewarded with top gong at the Cattery
AS the AFL Women’s season starts to wind down, clubs are starting to award their club best and fairest awards, recognising the stars of the season.
In this new series from Rookie Me Central, we take a look at the seasons of these club champions and what led them to have such stellar seasons.
Next up in the series, we head down the Princes Freeway and take a look at the season of star Cat Nina Morrison.
Morrison has come away from 2024 with her first ever club best and fairest award, winning with 138 votes ahead of Aishling Moloney, Georgie Prespakis, Becky Webster and Rachel Kearns.
She took out the top gong comes off the back of podium finishes in the last two seasons. It was another consistent year from Morrison, who really cemented herself as a crucial component of the Cats’ midfield despite still being only 23.
She spent on average 4 per cent more time on ground, which might not sound like much, but it did allow her to improve her averages in a number of key areas, including disposals, clearances, metres gained and tackles.

One problem that Morrison did face this year was when Amy McDonald went down with injury, there was pressure to lift and fill a hole that McDonald would normally fill.
As you can see in the table below, she matched McDonald’s output in all the key categories for a midfielder, but in many of the categories her figures were a drop from what she had been producing when McDonald was in the side.
