WHO GOES AT PICK ONE?

Greater Western Victoria midfielder Sam Lalor seems destined to have his name called out first on Wednesday night. With Richmond holding pick one, along with seven first round selections, the Tigers reportedly have a number of club legends on hand to present jumpers to their new crop of players.

Among them is Dustin Martin, who Lalor draws comparisons to. The inside bull has an explosive streak and dons the number four guernsey, also capable of winning games off his own boot inside forward 50. He is yet to have a full preseason and faced injury setbacks this year, so could still improve exponentially.

His upside has been placed alongside the consistency and bankability of Jagga Smith, for example. The agile accumulator set arguably the highest floor of any draft prospect this year, though Richmond may value Lalor’s ceiling as higher. Such conversations are why the pick one race has gone down to the wire.

Another name in the mix was Finn O’Sullivan. He was the consensus leading talent heading into 2024 but arguably fell short of top form due to an unlucky run of injuries. At his best, many still believe he could be the best player out of this year’s crop and he is certainly the most well-rounded midfielder available.
