Scholz Powers to Port Best and Fairest

WITH the AFL Women’s season coming to a close, clubs are starting to award their club champions, recognising the stars of the season.

In this new series from Rookie Me Central, we take a look at the seasons of each best and fairest winner and what led them to have such stellar seasons.

In the next edition of our series, we look at Matilda Scholz who won Port Adelaide’s Best and Fairest medal in her second season.

Scholz won the award six votes ahead of previous winner Abbey Dowrick, with Ashleigh Saint finishing in third. The top five was rounded out with fellow youngster Shineah Goody and defender Amelie Borg placing strongly.

Winning the League’s Rising Star as well as the Mark of the Year, Scholz has not had a case of the second year blues flourishing within the young side.

The 19-year-old has become one of the brightest young talents of the competition, averaging 22 hit-outs, 13.4 disposals and 4.6 clearances a game. She ended the year within the top ten for centre clearances and hit-outs illustrating her worth across the ground, in the air and when the ball hits the deck.

Her rise sees her go from third place in the club’s top honour and fourth in the Rising Star voting to taking out both awards twelve months later.

With a young core that boasts the talent of Scholz, Molly Brooksby, Lauren Young, Shineah Goody and Piper Window, Port Adelaide should continue to grow as a group in the coming years.
