Georgie’s going west after realising dream

EASTERN Ranges star Georgie Brisbane has got a big few months ahead of her, with a move to the other side of the country on the cards after being drafted by Fremantle in last week’s AFL Women’s Draft.

But, despite how huge the move is for anyone of any age let alone an 18-year-old, Brisbane is excited for the move.

“Yeah it’s a big move, but I’m super excited,” Brisbane said.

“My parents and my family and I, we’ve done heaps of traveling, so we’ve been to Perth a couple of times. I’m lucky enough to actually have some family over there, so I know that I’ll be welcomed in really well.

“It’s overwhelming, leaving my family. “But they’re super excited for me and they’re super happy. “They’re probably a bit jealous that I’m going to be spending a lot more time at the beach than them. But no, I’m super excited and I honestly can’t wait to get over there.”

The move will be easier for Brisbane because good friend Evie Parker will also be making the move after having also been picked up by the Dockers.

“I was waiting to see when the next Freo pick was and it was Holly Egan and that’s awesome because we met each other at the combine and we get along really well, but when Evie’s name was called out I was ecstatic,” Brisbane explained.

“It was the biggest smile that had come on my face. “We’ve played footy together for the past few years, and through that we’ve become really good friends, and we’ve become really similar. “I think having a like-minded person like Evie alongside me on the move to Perth would just be the best thing to just ease my way into this new routine and new life.”

Unfortunately for Brisbane she did not get drafted to the same side as another good friend of hers Hayley McLaughlin, but Brisbane did confirm that “she’s been a massive role model for me going into the draft and giving me an idea of what I’m going to expect”.

“One year I’m playing alongside her and she’s kicking me the footy on the field and next year she’s in the brown and gold and she’s just playing so well and she’s doing her role absolutely for the team,” Brisbane said. “So to watch my close friend like that just excel in life, it’s so exciting.”

Going into the draft, Brisbane was not 100 per cent sure that Fremantle would be the one to draft her, but she had her suspicions.

“To be honest, it was all a bit up in the air for the past couple of months,” she said. “I knew that they liked me and I knew that there was some interest there, but honestly, I didn’t think I would go that high in the draft.

“I was probably expecting around the late teens/early twenties and in the back of my mind, I knew that, just reflecting on the interviews that I’ve had with Freo and talking with my managers, they did have interest and they did like me, but it was a complete shock when my name was called out to them at pick 14, but a shock in the best way possible.”

As a forward Brisbane is about to have some big name teammates which she is very excited to play alongside.

“They’re building right now and even speaking to heaps of the girls, they’ve been messaging me like they’re saying they want to win a premiership and I’m coming into one of the most exciting times of the club,” Brisbane said.

“They’re a good team and I feel like they’re really well connected, so to be able to learn off those key forwards, and to get advice of them and to become the best forward that I can be, I’ve got the best opportunity coming up for me and I honestly can’t wait to just get to work and just learn so much so that  I can learn my role into the team and sort out where I would fit in that forwardline with all those forwards.”

She was not the only Eastern Ranges player drafted last week, with three of her teammates also picked up. As a leader of that side this season, she said that “it was unreal” to see so many of her teammates drafted, and that “I’ve never been so happy to be a part of such an amazing journey with all those girls that got drafted”.

“I’m just so happy for all of them and every club that has an Eastern Ranges girl now on their list, they’re in good hands, I know that’s for sure, and that those girls are not going to let that club down. So, big things to come and it’s very exciting for everyone, but just to be alongside their journey and to now see where they all have ended up, it’s insane and I’m just so happy for everyone.”
