2025 CTL | Round 7 Player of the Week: Cody Walker

BENDIGO Pioneers midfielder Cody Walker is our Coates Talent League Player of the Week after stuffing the stats sheet in Round 7. The bottom-ager led the game for disposals (31), kicks (23), marks (10), and inside 50s (seven), in a thrilling comeback victory over Greater Western Victoria (GWV) on Sunday.

Walker also notched a team-high eight tackles, five clearances, and three goals, bookending his performance strongly. He set the tone with 12 touches, five marks and a goal in term one before leading the final quarter onslaught with consecutive majors for the lead as his side ran over the top.
A powerful and dynamic ball winner, Walker recorded personal-bests across the board. The son of 202-game former Blue Andrew is tied to Carlton, but also holds eligibility for Richmond’s Next Generation Academy. He was Vic Country’s Under 16 MVP and All-Australian captain at last year’s carnival.
His Pioneers moved to a positive 3-2 record with the win over last year’s grand finalists. Diminutive Rebels midfielder Talor Byrne displayed his speed with 26 touches and two goals, while over-age ruck Flynn Penry showed out with 19 disposals, 31 hitouts, and a whopping 10 clearances.
Round 1 Player of the Week and pick one contender Willem Duursma impressed with 31 touches and a goal in Gippsland’s 16-point win over Sandringham. Jobe Scapin booted four goals in the same game to put his hand up as one to watch, awaiting a true string of breakout performances.
Although, arguably the closest contender to Walker was Geelong Falcons midfielder-forward Jesse Mellor. The Cats Next Generation Academy member booted five goals from 20 touches and seven marks in a loss to Tasmania, with that factor arguably putting him behind Walker for the nod.
Lions Academy gun Daniel Annable racked up another 30 disposals after his Round 5 nomination, while rising Sun Cooper Collins helped get his side over the line with four goals from 21 touches against Northern. Knight co-captain Sebastian Murphy had a round-high 36 possessions in the same game.
