2025 CTLG wrap | Giants complete clean sweep

GWS GIANTS Academy wrapped up its four-game Coates Talent League Girls stint as the only Northern Academy to remain undefeated over the past month. In Round 6, the Giants overcame the Western Jets to sit 4-0, with the two Queensland Academies also wrapping up their campaigns across the weekend. We recap how the weekend went down.

GWS Giants Academy capped off its unbeaten month with a commanding 57-point win over the winless Western Jets. The Giants looked on top early booting four goals in half a quarter before the Jets managed to stem the bleeding a touch. Back on top in the third term, the Giants again kicked clear, and then held on through the fourth to record an impressive 10.11 (71) to 2.2 (14) victory.

The Giants dominated the hitouts (48-23), clearances (39-28) and inside 50s (44-25) and realistically had their chances to win by even more. Western’s defence held up bravely against the fierce attack, but ultimately the Jets could not get their hands on the ball enough (197-256 disposals) in what was old fashioned wet weather football.

Between pouring rain and at a minimum severely wet under foot, the players had their challenges to overcome, but it was no surprise to see the two inside-dominant ball-winners in Isla Wiencke and Hannah Brodie stand up for their sides. Wiencke won a massive 11 clearances and seven clearances as well as laid five tackles from 24 disposals, while Brodie finished with 25 disposals, seven clearances and three inside 50s in defeat.

Wiencke was well supported by a couple of over-agers in Amelie Prosser-Shaw (23 disposals, five clearances, seven inside 50s and two goals) and Ellie Hall (22 disposals, five marks and four tackles), while top-age prospect Sophia Gaukrodger recorded 20 disposals, five tackles, seven inside 50s and kicked a goal in the win. Majella Day added another three goals to her name, as developing cross-code ruck Yasmeen Janschek used her height to advantage with 39 hitouts and four clearances.

Brodie had 12 more touches than any other Jet, with Jazmine Dalli (13 disposals, five tackles, five clearances and a goal) working hard going forward, while coming out of defence the likes of Makaylah Brne (13 disposals, three marks and four rebound 50s), Ellie Pawlowski (13 disposals, two marks, four tackles and three rebound 50s) and Alex McBride-Loane (12 disposals, three marks, three tackles and four rebound 50s) all tried hard.

While the Giants Academy players will head back to their respective AFL Sydney and AFL Canberra clubs, a handful will get the opportunity to represent the Allies at the 2025 AFL Women’s Under 18 Championships. For the Western Jets, they have an extended break until June 7 where they face-off against the GWV Rebels at Mars Stadium.
