WESTERN Jets key forward Jake Miller is our Coates Talent League Player of the Week after dominant debut in Round 13. The 16-year-old booted four goals from 18 disposals and 11 marks (four contested) as his side went down by an even 30 points to the Oakleigh Chargers at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.
>> SNAPSHOT: 2025 Coates Talent League – Round 13
Miller becomes the third Jet in four rounds to earn a Player of the Week nomination, and the fourth overall this season. It comes after he booted two majors for Vic Metro at the same venue in a win over their Country counterparts, helping kick off the Under 16 National Championships last month.
At 196cm, Miller was a force to be reckoned with in Western’s front half. He presented full-chested up the ground and was clean overhead, while also proving an aerial threat inside 50. The left-footer booted three of his four majors in the second half to help keep the margin competitive after Western’s slow start.
The Jets remain bottom of the full-time regions this year with a 2-7 record, having claimed its second victory only last Sunday. They’ll move on to face Bendigo Pioneers in Mildura in Round 14, while Miller’s next assignment with Vic Metro arrives on July 15 for the Queensland leg of the Under 16 carnival.
Around the grounds in Round 13, Essendon-tied prospects Hussien El Achkar and Adam Sweid couldn’t have done much more in Calder’s one-point loss to Sandringham. The former broke through for six goals, while the latter racked up 34 disposals and seven clearances as the Cannons were overrun.
The pair’s Vic Metro Under 18 teammate, Oliver Greeves also impressed for Eastern Ranges. In his first Coates Talent League appearance since Round 5, the 191cm midfielder posted 33 disposals, six clearances and a goal as Eastern thrashed Greater Western Victoria (GWV) by 66 points.
Another couple of outstanding performances came in the Bendigo-Northern clash. Pioneers defender Tom Evans (38 disposals, nine marks) and Knights swingman Gabriel Stumpf (31 and 13) showed out as over-agers in the home side’s two-point victory at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
