GEELONG Falcons lead the way with four members in our Coates Talent League Team of the Week after their even five-goal win over Dandenong Stingrays. Among those to make the cut were the Falcons’ twin tall forwards, an athletic key position utility, and a prolific over-age midfielder.
>> CTL Round 13: Snapshot | Player of the Week
DEFENCE
B: Tom Evans (BP) – Gabriel Stumpf (NK) – Finn Davis (WJ)
HB: Xavier Taylor (ER) – Jett Elek (GF) – Sam Niklaus (GWV)
A pair of over-agers were prolific in the Bendigo-Northern clash and team up on our hypothetical full back line. Pioneers playmaker Tom Evans led all comers with 38 disposals and nine marks, while athletic Knights tall Gabriel Stumpf trailed closely with 31 and 13. Both also notched eight rebound 50s.
The likes of Xavier Taylor (Eastern) and Finn Davis (Western) provided a great deal of versatility for their sides, able to both intercept and rebound with vigour. They have been regulars in our Teams of the Week this season and are part of the Vic Metro setup, with Davis being a train-on. Taylor is a first round talent.
At the opposite end of the ground to Taylor, Greater Western Victoria dasher Sam Niklaus played with plenty of dare to stand out in a losing cause. Meanwhile, the second key defensive slot is filled by Jett Elek, whose courage and athletic upside earned him a spot ahead of Dandenong’s Adrian Cole.
MIDFIELD
FOL: Louis Emmett (OC) – Adam Sweid (CC) – Thomas McGuane (WJ)
C: Louis Hodder (DS) – Oliver Greeves (ER) – Rory Wright (SD)
A stacked midfield group is littered with Vic Metro talent, with Dandenong’s Louis Hodder being the only exception. He scrapped hard on both sides of midfield to win 20 disposals and lay six tackles as the Stingrays went down to Geelong. He remains the region’s lone representative this week.
Oakleigh ruck Louis Emmett returned in emphatic fashion against Western, booting two goals from 22 disposals and showing great touch around the ground. In the same game, Thomas McGuane was exceptional with 28 touches and a goal. He started up forward but also made an impact on-ball.
Also at the centre bounces are Oliver Greeves (Eastern) and Adam Sweid (Calder). Ranges captain Greeves slotted back in for his first game since Round 5 with 33 disposals and a goal, while Essendon NGA prospect Sweid picked up a game-high 34 touches as the Cannons were overrun by Sandringham.
The only other player to tick up to 30 disposals in that game was Dragons goer Rory Wright. Having bolted into the Vic Metro squad with outstanding early-season form, he turned out for his first Coates Talent League game since Round 5 and produced an equal-best disposal tally for the year.
FORWARD
HF: Lachy Dovaston (ER) – Jake Miller (WJ) – Jack Pickett (GF)
F: Keenan Boi (GP) – Archie Ludowyke (SD) – Hussien El Achkar (CC)
Player of the Week Jake Miller spearheads the attack after booting four goals from 11 marks (four contested) on debut for Western. The 16-year-old is joined by star prospect Archie Ludowyke, who also slotted a quartet of majors and took six marks in Sandringham’s one-point win over Calder.
In the same game as Ludowyke, Cannons livewire Hussien El Achkar snared a round-high six goals to put his recent yips behind him. It was a decent week for smalls, with Gippsland’s Keenan Boi and Eastern’s Lachy Dovaston both putting up four-goal performances to help fill out the front six.
Geelong Falcons bottom-ager Jack Pickett also features up at half-forward. The high-flying 193cm talent is a mobile marking target and attacked the ball with vigour to reel in three strong marks. He also hit the scoreboard with four goals, including three of the Falcons’ five in the opening quarter.
INTERCHANGE
INT: Tanner Armstrong (MB), Luke Cheffers (GP), Kobe George (GF), Daniel Lowther (GF), Liam Masters (GP), Charlie Whitehead (OC)
Pickett’s partner-in-crime on Sunday was Daniel Lowther, who managed 3.4 in the Falcons’ five-goal win over Dandenong. Teammate and fellow over-ager Kobe George was also hard to deny after leading all-comers with 28 disposals and six marks, taking up a role in Geelong’s depleted midfield.
Gippsland also boasts a pair of prospects on our bench this week, namely Luke Cheffers (29 disposals) and Liam Masters (21). Murray bottom-ager and Richmond NGA candidate Tanner Armstrong gathered 29 touches to round out the bench alongside Oakleigh utility Charlie Whitehead (26 disposals).
