Walker strides onto RMC Medal podium

CARLTON father-son gun Cody Walker has made his move onto the Rookie Me Central Medal podium after another best on ground performance in Round 16. The bottom-ager amassed 38 disposals, eight marks and 12 inside 50s as his Bendigo Pioneers went down to Calder Cannons by five points.

It was Walker’s third three-vote game for the season, a feat fittingly matched by the player he is tied for second place with, Dandenong midfielder Callum Smith. The Vic Country teammates are level on 11 votes each, only one behind long-time leader and pick one contender Willem Duursma (Gippsland).
Duursma is looking to follow in the footsteps of elder brother Zane in taking out the Rookie Me Central Medal. Like Zane, he earned a VFL debut with Casey Demons having consistently dominated the Under 18 grade. Gippsland remains top of the full-time regions despite a second-straight loss on the weekend.
While Northern got the better of the Power, bottom-ager Cody Templeton starred with 5.4 from 15 disposals to be adjudged best afield. Knights over-ager Liam Farrar also bagged five goals in that game to nab a vote behind prolific teammate Nicholas Driscoll (28 disposals, eight inside 50s).
Murray Bushrangers bull Ryder Corrigan was our choice for Player of the Week. The midfielder posted 32 disposals, eight clearances and two goals to help his side move off the foot of the ladder. He also got the three votes ahead of Bushies ruck Zac Harding, who had 24 touches, 22 hitouts, and eight clearances.
Elsewhere, Eastern Ranges extractor Josiah Landy was similarly impactful with 26 disposals, nine clearances and three goals in a comfortable victory over Sandringham. Oakleigh’s Doug Kerr was another midfielder to earn three votes with a hat-trick of goals from his 20 disposals.
Only three home-and-away rounds remain in the Coates Talent League, with an evenly spread vote count leaving plenty of prospects in the running to take home this year’s medal. The top 10 leaderboard remains stretched out to 15, with the competition’s best performed players jostling for ascendancy.
