SANFL Round 4 draft prospects update
With the SANFL completing round four over the weekend, 2017 South Australian draft talent was on show at League, Reserves and U18 Level. We take a look at who the top performers were across the grades:
League:
Alex Martini collected 14 disposals playing mainly as a running defender for Glenelg, the 2016 Captain of Sacred Heart College has been playing consistently all season and is in the running for a big Under 18 National Championships having played this season against the hardened bigger bodies. Darcy Fogarty returned to the SANFL after various AFL Academy duties, slotting into the Glenelg League team and had 18 disposals. Still in Year 12, Fogarty will be juggling League, School and State commitments for the rest of the year. Mitch Crowden’s Sturt had the Bye.
Reserves:
Norwood’s Stefan Giro was named best with his 31 disposals, six tackles and three goals, and must be pushing for senior selection after being emergency a couple of weeks ago. Lachie Pascoe (Norwood) was consistent again with 26 disposals (including 19 kicks). Norwood’s youth policy continues with Corey Smith getting 21 disposals and booting two goals, while Brodie Carroll had 17 disposals. Jackson Edwards (Glenelg) – potential Crows Father-Son (Tyson Edwards) , returned to footy with 16 possessions. Sturt and Woodville-West Torrens had the Bye.
U18s:
Despite Norwoods loss to South Adelaide, midfielder Cole Gerloff had a complete game with 34 disposals (including 25 kicks), 15 marks and eight tackles. After an unsettled start to the season through niggling injuries, he is now showing some real consistency and returns to School Football this weekend for Prince Alfred College. Hayden Sampson (South Adelaide) was again amongst it with 22 disposals and three goals. Brad McCarthy (Glenelg) returning to the U18s from the Reserves was named in bests, leading with 24 disposals playing through the midfield.
Central Districts tall Ryan Falkenberg was best for the Doggies with three goals from nine marks. Woodville-West Torrens’ Cooper Gaffney was a tackling machine in their win over Sturt, with 23 disposals and 15 tackles to be best on ground and win the Round 4 U18 MVP Nomination. He was also supported by smooth underage tall Jack Lukosius who played up forward, kicking three goals and clunking 10 marks. Adam Trenorden (Sturt) showed some good defensive efforts with 10 tackles alongside 30 disposals, and potential Top 20 selection Callum Coleman-Jones (Sturt) played up forward taking some outstanding contested marks to go with his 23 disposals.
Small West Adelaide midfielder Alex Stidiford was again in the best in their win over North Adelaide, with a team high 26 disposals including seven tackles and a goal. 2018 Draft hopeful and Academy member Connor Rozee was again best for North. Utility Nathan Kreuger (South Adelaide) was also thrown into the midfield at times for South Adelaide on the weekend, with four centre clearances to go with his 13 disposals.
