A potential mature-age selection, Josh Chatfield has done the hard yards coming through the GWV Rebels program in 2017-18, and then moving into the state league system. As a 23-year-old now, Chatfield has been utilised at both ends of the ground with Footscray VFL where he averaged around 12 disposals and five marks in 2023.

Chatfield has areas such as his production and defensive pressure to improve on, but his clean hands and nice aerial work stand out on the field. Able to take it one-grab in the air, provide rebound out of the back 50 or hit the scoreboard, Chatfield has proven himself against senior bodies for a number of years now.

Though not always front of mind playing alongside a lot of quality state league talents, Chatfield held his own and earned an AFL Draft State Combine invite to come into consideration. With a lack of depth in the traditional draft age talent pool, recruiters have been looking elsewhere for players who could step up to the elite level and Footscray is a happy hunting ground.
