IN Round 20 of the Western Australia Football League (WAFL) Colts competition, Subiaco defeated East Fremantle by 13 points at East Fremantle Oval.

The result saw the Lions claim the minor premiership for the first time in the club’s history.

Below are our opinion based summations of the best players from the game.

East Fremantle:

#6 Tom Wright

The Winnacott junior was outstanding in the midfield for the reigning premiers with 16 possessions, eight tackles, four marks and a goal. His tough inside work helped the Sharks almost claw their way to victory.

#8 Dylan Curley

The WAFL Colts excitement machine showed glimpses of why he is such a highly rated prospect. He only finished with nine possessions and seven marks but his impact was enormous. He pulled down several spectacular pack marks and his disposal inside 50 was crisp. The Mullewa junior has an exciting future!

#9 Corey Robinson

The Aquinas College student was his exceptional self in the midfield for the Sharks, with 23 possessions, six inside 50s, three tackles, two marks and a goal. His combination of contested ball-winning ability and his skilful outside game make him an attractive midfield prospect. Currently fourth in the WAFL Colts Coaches Award, expect a late surge from Robinson to potentially snatch the award.

#15 Jake Diggle

Arguably East Fremantle’s most valuable player, Diggle was dynamic on the half-back flank with a team-high 28 possessions, and an equal team-high eight marks. His elite skills, and his smart reading of the play are similar to how Western Bulldogs’ young gun Ed Richards plays.

#22 Trent Rivers

The 17 year-old continued to push his draft stocks for next year with another solid performance against the Lions. Rivers collected 19 possessions, took five marks and laid four tackles in a complete performance.

#23 Luke Jackson 

The AFL Academy member showcased why he is a possible first round selection for next year’s draft. He accumulated 14 possessions, won 11 hitouts and booted two goals in a dazzling display. His ruck craft combined with his endurance make him a leading prospect.

#25 Cameron Davidson

The Collie product continued his fine season with an accomplished performance against Subiaco. He collected 20 possessions and took eight marks in what was another superb performance. His sound decision-making along with his elite skills make him one of the best midfielders in the competition.

#28 Nick Watson

The 2016 WA Under 16s State Academy member showcased why he is one of the premier rucks in the WAFL Colts competition. He finished with 16 possessions, 27 hitouts, five marks, two tackles and two inside 50s to easily be the most valuable ruckman on the ground. His ability to cover he ground is second-to-none and his leadership qualities almost inspired his team to victory.

#30 Cody Smith

One of the best hybrid forwards in the competition, Smith was exceptional in the forward half for the Sharks. He accumulated 19 possessions, laid a team-high nine tackles, recorded three inside 50s, took two marks and kicked a goal in an accomplished performance.

Subiaco:

#3 Tristan Hobley

The 2016 WA Under 16s State Academy representative showed why he is the best midfielder in the competition with another polished display. He accumulated 27 possessions, took nine marks, laid two tackles and recorded two inside 50s to be one of the best players on the ground.

#4 Matthew Pannell

The Sorrento-Duncraig junior was back to his best against the Sharks. As an attacking half-back flanker, Pannell caused headaches for East Fremantle’s coaching staff as he willed himself to 26 possessions and nine marks. His explosive run-and-carry, damaging skills, elite vision and sound decision-making make him an exciting prospect.

#10 Jack Mayo

The 2018 WAFL Colts Leading Goalkicker showed glimpses of why he is the best key forward prospect from Western Australia. He finished with nine possessions, four hit-outs, three marks, three tackles, two inside 50s and a goal (and two behinds). His leading patterns, strong marking ability and excellent skills make him one of the most damaging forward prospects in this year’s draft.

#13 Liam Hickmott

The reigning Best and Fairest winner is putting together another fantastic season and he continued his rich vein of form against East Fremantle. He won a game-high 29 possessions, laid nine tackles, recorded four inside 50s and took two marks in another strong outing. He is eligible to Carlton under the father/son rule and he looks an attractive prospect for the Blues as a big-bodied midfielder.

#15 Wil Hickmott

The younger son of former Carlton and Geelong player Adrian Hickmott, Wil is one of the classiest midfielders in the competition. He gathered 18 possessions, took three marks, recorded three inside 50s and kicked a goal in another strong performance. His ability to use the footy exceptionally well should have the Blues recruiters smiling.

#16 Taj Schofield

The son of Port Adelaide premiership player Jarrad Schofield, Taj continues to impress his 2020 draft prospects. Arguably the best player on the ground, Schofield finished with 27 possessions, six marks, five tackles, and four inside 50s. Still only 15-years-old, Schofield’s room for improvement is frightening.

#17 Kyle Stainsby

The reigning Newton Screaigh Medallist was his usual busy self for the Lions. He accumulated 17 possessions, laid a game-high 10 tackles, and took two marks in an outstanding display. His ability to weave and break through tackles is similar to Richmond star Reece Conca.

#18 Jacob Peletier

The Esperance product was exceptional for the Lions. He finished with 19 possessions, six marks, five tackles and four inside 50s to be one of the best midfielders on the ground.

#26 Sam West

The Sorrento-Duncraig junior was inspirational at centre half-back for the Lions, often intercepting the Sharks’ attacking forays before rebounding the ball with precision. He finished with 10 possessions, six marks and five tackles.
