SNAPSHOT: “A contested marking specialist who regularly hits the scoreboard, particularly early in matches.”

A dual sportsperson, Abby Hobson split her time between football and tennis, which though not a traditional combination of sports, worked well until she ultimately leaned towards the former. Like many others the “team atmosphere” is what Hobson gravitated towards, and she found herself playing for Koo Wee Rup post-Covid.

After a season in the Under 14s side, Hobson moved to the Gippsland Power border side in Pakenham where she began to show signs of being an impressive tall forward. There, she kicked 19 goals in 12 games as a 14-year-old and was picked for the V/Line Cup. The next natural progression was into the Power program, where she played 10 games for the side and kicked 21 goals – at least one in each game – as a double bottom-ager.

Also representing Vic Country at the AFLW Under 16 Championships, Hobson began to become a household name around the talent pathways. She stepped up to play seniors for Pakenham and booted four goals in her side’s Senior Women’s Division One Grand Final.

Fast forward to 2025, and Hobson purely focused her time between the Power and Vic Country, booting 20 goals in 13 games for the former, while averaging 16.9 disposals and 6.2 marks. She also did not look out of depth for Country during the national championships, kicking three goals from her four games and picking up 11.5 disposals, 3.3 marks and 2.5 inside 50s there.

Hobson has become known as a first quarter specialist given her ability to boot goals early in games and get her side off the perfect start. She might not be the most athletic forward, but her work rate and smarts in the front half enable her to be damaging both when going inside 50 or directly on the scoreboard.

+ Strength
+ Aerial ability
+ Forward craft
+ Footy IQ

+ Endurance

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Athleticism
- Groundballs

Hobson is a reliable marking target in the front half of the ground, competing strongly in the air, but then following up at ground level. While her groundballs are a source of improvement, they have noticeably got better throughout her top-age season, learning to cope when the ball is not always delivered lace-out.

The Gippsland Power talent's main threat is her aerial work, which culminates her strength overhead and natural forward craft. While most of her marks come either inside 50 or around the 50-metre arc, Hobson is more than capable of pushing up the ground and being a target from the kickout or next disposal down the line exiting defensive 50.

She is helped by the fact her endurance is quote impressive for a tall, and particularly a stronger tall who is not overly athletic. She covers the ground well due to her bigger tank which means she works over opponents more so than explodes on the lead like some. Though in the past the stronger marking, less athletic forwards have not had as much luck, Hobson has similar hands to that of Lexi Gregor from last year, albeit really only in a forward capacity.

Hobson has had her stints through the middle and as a big-bodied onballer she is not completely at sea, able to use her body well. If she is to play that role at higher levels, she will need to further increase her midfield knowledge, but her bread and butter comes in that tall forward capacity. At 174cm she is a little smaller than a key position type, but plays above her height and will rarely be beaten one-on-one.

A lot of people focus on Hobson's ability to nail goals even on tight angles, but an underrated skill of hers is her field kicking which is usually on-point. Quite often you will see Hobson clunk a mark and then wheel around to hit a target downfield with great effect. While her groundballs are still an improvement area, she is far more capable once the ball hits the deck than previously.

Often Hobson's goals through the Coates Talent League came in the first term, sometimes kicking three or even four goals in a quarter to start the game. While naturally tapering off due to it being incredibly difficult to hold that kind of level for four quarters or her team have the same dominance for the full match, it shows she is very often up for the fight from the first bounce.

Going forward, Hobson is the type of player who clubs will view as that third tall marking forward, and one whose hands are so safe that as long as you put it within her vicinity, she will pull it down. More than a few times, the Power prospect has made a bad kick look good with her positioning, strength and hands.

While she has elements to build on in order to become a bigger threat, her natural footballing traits do standout and no doubt a number of clubs will be considering her in the upcoming AFLW Draft.

DRAFT RANGE: 30-50

Abby Hobson is a contested marking specialist who can outbody opponents one-on-one through great positioning and smarts. While not the most athletic player, Hobson can leap at the ball and pull just about anything down before hurting the opposition on the scoreboard, which has resulted in her earning a National Draft Combine invite. Expect her to be amongst the mid-draft logjam.
